Missing VVT!

Hi all,

I just keep having more and more fun with these cars!

Well, took my girl Bionda out Sunday for a beautiful drive. Opened the hood to find that the VVT was missing!

From searching the Board, I gather that the VVT is used for emissions.

Questions:

1. Do I need the VVT to drive?

2. Is it true that without the VVT I get more power?

Thanks,

Vin

The VVT is used to advance the intake camshaft. This allows a smoother idle and, I assume, lower emmissions at idle (by keeping the camshaft 'retarded' at idle). Without the VVT the car should run OK but it won't develop full power.

To question one, no, you can drive the car as long as the hole in the Valve Cover is sealed. (Giant oil leak!!!!!)

To question two, you will get less power without the VVT Solenoid. The whole idea of opening the valves sooner is to get more of an Air/Fuel mixture into the cylinder at higher RPMs. (The VVT Phaser is on the Camshaft, the Solenoid alows oil into the Phaser to advance Intake Cam Timming.)

Are you saying the VVT solenoid has gone missing (i.e. it was there, but fell off), or that you've discovered it was not there when you bought the car (i.e. non-original engine and/or head)? Got any pics?
