Motor Mounts and the Big Hose on the L-Jet.
I've read the postings on deteriorating motor mounts and the fan shroud. I have another problem: the big intake hose keeps working loose from either the air flow meter or the rigid intake pipe (I carry a screwdriver in the glovebox for road-side repairs). It seems that no matter how tight I make the clamps, the large hose eventually works loose.
Could dying motor mounts allow enough torquing of the engine to cause jiggle things loose?

One other thing to check is for the presence of the metal reinforcing ring inside the rigid plastic air duct. It can be seen here: embarrassing confession
If that metal piece is dislodged or missing then the clamp is only squeezing against the plastic of the duct.
Of course that doesn't explain how the hose gets pulled off the Air Flow Meter. Which leads us back to bad motor mounts. BTW, check the price of the plastic air ducts (be sure you're sitting down). If the clamps were to hold tight enough, bad motor mounts that allow the engine to rock far enough could tear the air duct ho$e.
And, bad motor mounts can allow the engine to rise UP (say on a bad bump in the road) and dent the hood!

I was afraid of that.
Thanks, all.
I have new intake runners for the car and will prolly put in a silicone hose kit while I'm at it.
With part of the induction out it is likely a good time to do the mounts.

Speaking of motor mounts, two questions:
1. Which parts place to you get the mounts from?
2. How do you steady the engine while replacing the mounts? Use and engine hoist or is there a way to block it while replacing mounts.

With the intake stuff off it'd be the ideal time to replace the right side motor mount.
You can lift the weight off the mounts with an engine hoist -or- place a wide wooden board under the sump and lift with a jack. You don't need to raise it up very much - just enough to take the weight off the mount.

And, to add to Eric's always v good advice, IF your car is equipped with the famous oil pan fin guard, below the pan, you neednt remove. Simply slide a 3/4" pine board (or 1/2" plywood, I cant remember) between the fins and the guard, to add rigidity, yet wood protection to the fins, then you can jack up the steel protective bars with jack without damaging/bending that bracket.........

Didja happen to have a choice between the square or round or rubber or poly, or did it matter at that moment in time?
Square is supposed to be stiffer tougher than round, while the poly in thoery should last WAY longer than rubber.
