Cigerette seals??

Hi everyone....so far all is going well with quad. Even got the AC to work just by adding freon...lucky.

So does anyone know anything about these seals? Are they easy to replace? Expensive to replace? This seems to be the only place i am leaking oil.

Thanks

Not going to happen with the motor in the car. How do you know its the cig seals leaking? My bet is that you are referring to something else. Cig seals slide into either side of the rear main crank journal.

With the engine out for overhaul, they are still somewhat tempermental to get in. I actually froze mine for installation.

Best Regards,
John M

Hi John

thats a great question. i don't know for sure. it was the best estimation of the mechanic that had it on the rack. i was thinking it was a lower pan seal but this is my first alfa so i don't know what the tendencies are on these motors.

any other thoughts or tests or things to look at for the leak? the top motor was recently rebuilt (10k miles ago) but i don't know the history of the bottom. i have had it for only a month.

I doubt the cigareete seals would cause a problem. They are very tight when installed and they're not holding oil under any pressure. More likely is a gasket or the rear main seal.

I would clean the engine well and take it for a light spin around the neighborhood. Then hop under there and see first if its from the front or back of the motor. If from the front, you have a number of locations to check:

front cover
cam cover
head gasket
oil cap
distributor o ring
upper and lower pan

If from the rear:

cam cover
head to cam cover half moon seals
head gasket
upper pan seal
rear main
seal on the trans

Once you start with a clean motor you'll have far more success in locating the leak. If its small...heck don't worry about it. If its making puddles...time to fix.

Best Regards,
John M

Also front crank pulley seal, or the more horrific cracked front pulley keyway which will likely take the seal with it, and the small bolts up front that go in from the bottom on the cylinder head.
