Interior Clean-up

I checked other postings, but didn't see this specifically.

If someone was doing a restoral, and removed the carpet and the sound absorbtion material, etc, how would the get down to bare metal?

The reason I ask is that I pulled up most of the carpet yesterday, and then pulled up two layers of material. The first had a metalic backing, with fiber on the other side, almost like insulation.

The second material, which was on the engine/firewall side was/is black material, about 1/4" thick that is firmly attached and will not come up easily.

I would like to get the metal down to just metal. Any tricks of the trade?

Thanks
Jim

Jim - That the old insulation. Just pull it off. It's stuck on through years of getting wet, then drying etc. Why is it important to get down to metal? I thought you were going to junk the tub after you strip it.

John,
Fair question. My final auction will be for the car frame, so I want it to be as presentable as possible. Someone might want to restore the body, or have a need. I will start the bidding at $5 (in honor of someone who offered me their old Spider for $5 with a working engine but no interior as I debated on trying to restore this one). The only condition is the car frame will need to be picked up. If after that, it doesn't go, I will be calling a towing company to tow (or drag) away what is left.

Plus, as I continue to work on the interior, I have always kept the car clean so I am not working in dirt or spare parts. Last point is as I do this project, I want to learn as much as I can so I can hit my next Alfa running (no pun intended).

Jim

This post may lend some help. Though my Alfa's probably older, in therory it's done the same way. The seats, rubber mats, carpet and fibirous jute were all removed. The only thing I could save was the rubber mats as gear oil had crept up into the jute and carpet. Seats have been recovered and there is a post about them on the restore forum.

Hope this help some.
