Throwout bearing difference

I have a thread on Transmissions, but I thought I would post this here to get more answers. I am changing the clutch on my 1985 Spider Veloce.

Here are the comparison picts for my throwout bearing (new on the left old on the right). Does anyone know why they are different? I am a little worried as the old one is a little taller/thicker than the new due to the collar that sticks out from the front.

Gadwhite, my old one is the same as your new one (1981 Spider). Not that it's very helpful, but it is more evidence the new one might be trustworthy.

The way the PO kept this car maintained, it's probably the original factory piece from 1980!!

Hang around for a few minutes, I'll go see if I can dig up the old bearing I pulled out of mine and snap some pix.

K, here ya go.

What looks like rust is, (it sits in a box out in the garage waiting for some alternate use) but the bearing spins as free and quiet as the new one that replaced it.

No idea on how old it actually is/was prior to the swap as I've only had the car 5 years.

I would expect that the difference is that they are made by different makers. Wheather the new one will work as effectively as the old, I don't know. Where did you get the new one and whose box was it in? OEM for Alfa is Sachs of Germany. Many other makers in different countries also offer replacement cultches for Alfas, so that may explain it. I woud not install it until I got some assurance that it is correct for the Alfa. Way too much trouble to R & R a transmission just because some dummy sold you the wrong piece. Never assume that the parts you were sold are correct just because some low paid parts counterman pushed it across the counter or made up your shipment.

Thanks looks like my new one is like everyone elses, and the old one is the bad one.

Bearing Design

Bearings are designed to match the spring release fingers on the presure plates. Your "flat faced" new one will match the turned up tips as on later model pressure plates.

As far as I know, all the parts places list only one TO bearing for all 1750/2000 cars with hydraulic diaphragm clutch. Is the front face on your old one (the side that hits the diaphragm spring) dished? If so, I've never seen that. I've only seen flat surfaces there.

Gadwhite,

I got my new throw out bearing from IAP. It came with the Sach's Clutch and Pressure Plate Kit.

Here is a comparison of my worn out old one and the new Sach's bearing (on the right).

2 peas in a pod. I really wonder if the old one is the original? It's possible.
