Tail Light Bulb Socket "Upgrade"

I posted this in "Electrical" but got no response. Has anyone found a modern replacement for the tail light bulb socket that will fit in a Spider?

The little copper tab in my tail light bulb socket broke. I drilled out the rivets and the socket removed easily. I tried a standard replacement bulb socket from the local auto parts store but there is not enough clearance behind the tail light assembly. The Spider requires a low-profile or perhaps a 90 degree socket to fit. Looks like there is only about 3/4 inch clearance behind the tail light assembly.

thanks.

if you start to drill and do that much work. why not just solder in LEDs and a resistor and be done with it for ever? or else just get a good used one.

I have looked at that as a viable option but I have only found LED bulbs that require the same 1157 type socket. Can you suggest any sources for a "hard-wired" LED that would not require the automotive type socket? Thanks for the suggestion.

Anyone out there done a LED swap (and used something other than the 1157 direct replacement bulb)? Has anyone used the 1157 direct replacement bulbs? Are you pleased with the results?

I tried the 1157 LED "bulbs" a while back and was very disappointed. Because the LED's are so directional in their output (towards the lens, and none to the reflector), they're just a little dot in the middle of the lens. I'd love to find some multi-LED flat panels of the proper size that might be mounted behind each lens.

might get one or more of the cheap LED truck type lamps and take them apart and just use the LED board. other wise you might drill a bunch of holes just the size of a led and push them in each hole one at a time then just wire them up. if they show thru some then use that, drill some some sort of pattern that looks nice.

NO, NO, NO! Here is a website that has leds all prewired in a number of different ways.

eBay Motors: 48CM 48X RED LED Flexible Strip Car Bar Line Light (item 300209271075 end time May-20-08 09:21:25 PDT)

This particular listing is for an LED strip of 48 LEDs. Do a search in his listings to find what you need. I just finished converting a 3rd brake light to LED that I will then mount on my Graduate when I remove the spoiler. I simply removed the existing light and installed the LED strip. I am looking for an Alfa tail light with the light socket, so I can design an LED setup for the Alfa. I did the same for my Fiat and it works quite well.

I will warn you that this guy on eBay has exorbitant shipping charges and he will not combine shipping charges. He does not play well with others.

Cool beans! Funny, but I was just searching on eBay for LED strips when I got the email alert about your post. I'm going to order a strip and make that reflector between the tail lights on my '92 Spider a 4th brake light, and I'm going to do all the lamps in my '74, too. Thanks for the pointer.

Have you guys seen these:

eBay Motors: AUTOMATIC BRAKE LIGHT FLASHER BLINKER SYSTEM@ REARALERT (item 290229288907 end time May-19-08 04:35:56 PDT)

I installed one on my '87 Spider last week, and in my wife's Acura TSX this weekend. Really looks nice, and grabs your attention. 5 minute install, too, and I secured it with some double-sided trim tape to the underside of the trunk lid.

eBay Motors: 2x Car Amber LED Adhesive Turn Signal Bulbs Light New (item 200222698181 end time May-15-08 12:35:45 PDT)

Here is an eBay site for more LED lights that are less expensive than the other site that I recommended. I am going to try these amber turn lights for my SUV. The shipping from this site is more reasonable. Do a list search for more of their items.

Try autolumination.com, superlightled.com, or lightlens.com. I bought strobe brake/running led's for my Giulia Sprint GT Veloce and they work great. The bulbs arn't cheap, but have built in resistors, are omni-directional, and they strobe for the 1st 3 seconds when you apply the brakes. I also sprayed the housings with "just-like-chrome" paint for increased reflectivity. They're much brighter, visible, and effective now. I have a much higher "comfort" level. Only an idiot would not see my lamps! I also replaced the dash bulbs with 'warm white' led's and can now see the gauges without taking my full attention from the road.

Great info, thanks!

LED dash lights

Veloce67:
Would you please give us the specifics about replacing your dash lights? I have to carry a flashlight around with me at night to see my dash! I would love to replace my dash lights. Any pictures and even stock numbers/vendors/manufacturers of the bulbs you used with be MOST helpful.

Many, many thanks,
Dean

Well, I did some serious research and ordered some of the biggest, baddest LED's I could find to try in my '92 Spider. Unfortunately, I got mixed results.

To start, I installed the first set in the front parking lights (the white side of that double-lens), and am very happy with the result. here's what I used:

Product Listing - CAR

Scroll down to the 20th type of bulb, 67-x15 LED bulb. They are whiter and brighter than the original bulbs, and fit without modification.

next, I replaced the license plate bulbs, map light (the one on the stretch cord in the glove box), rear view mirror light (I installed the older type with internal light), and floor lights. Again, pretty nice results, although not really any brighter, the light is whiter and looks better. Here's what I used:

Product Listing - CAR

Scroll down to the 18th type of bulb, 3910-x6 LED. I'll get more of these for the same fitment in my '87 and the rear view mirror of my '74.

Now the bad news, the 1156's in the brake lights and backup lights. Here's what I bought from an eBay vendor:

eBay Motors: 1156 39-LED Lights White 2-Bulbs Bright Wide View Angle (item 110259377974 end time Jun-07-08 13:30:33 PDT)

One would have thought that with 39 LED's these would be brighter and bounce enough light off the reflectors to work great, but they really didn't. Again, the light was whiter, but I only installed them in one side of the car, to compare with the originals, and they were awful. The light intensity was maybe 70% of the originals, so out they came. In fact, my motivation to try the LED's at all was to try and get some seriously bright brake lights, so having these 1156's not work out was really too bad.

I didn't bother with any of the signal lights because of the complications that would have been caused by either having to install resistors (so the original flasher was able to flash) or swap the flasher for one designed for LED's. I'm glad I didn't because I'm guessing the 1157 LED's would have been just as disappointing as the 1156's.

Finally, I had plans to make that reflector strip between the two taillights into a 4th brake light, by using one of the multiple LED strips sold on eBay. But, the housing is glued together and the built-in license plate lights are in the way. Perhaps if I see a cheap used reflector on eBay, I'll grab it and cut it apart to see what I might do, but I'm not about to cut up the one on my car.

As a general rule, it appears that using LED's to replace the lower wattage bulbs works well enough, but the bigger, brighter bulbs don't seem to yet have suitable LED replacements available.

That's disapointing to hear about the tail lights. I was looking forward to hear that you got great results there. Great to hear you got good results with the running lights.
