Prepping for Paint
I'm getting the spider repainted and have been asked by the guy doing it to strip the parts of the car for him to paint it. i'm guessing this is all chrome parts, trim, door handles, badges, bumpers. Do i need to remove the headlights, taillights, blinkers etc....etc? For a repaint how much can be removed and how much can be taped?

The more stuff you remove, the less overspray will show on things like rubber strips and chrome.
Remove as much as you dare/can. It will make for a MUCH better paint job! IMHO.

I councour with SW- I'm currently prepping my '67 for paint and body, and am taking everything possible off, as well as doing some of the other prep (removing bad old respray- car was originally green, poorly painted white, will ultimately be silver! ). I'm pretty much taking it down to bare metal as much as possible, but I don't recommend this for everyone- this is the main reason most decent paint jobs are so expensive- a LOT of labor! Good luck!

I prepared my Spider like this. These are the bare essentials needed for riding on the car's own power:
(The rear chrome trim piece could not be worked loose. Upon arrival I removed the electric cables too and will soon remove the engine.)

Alan:
Where are you located in OK? I am in Tulsa and it would be nice to see how your paint job turns out as my 86 Grad will be needing a paint job this winter.

IMO, the less paint utlimately left on the car the better. Leaving old paint on, especially many layers can lead to early failure - cracking, checking etc.

I agree- I started a thread a while back on my '67 Spider, but haven't updated it lately- tedious work, but I'm doing basically what Inner Circle has done- removing everything I can unbolt, stripping and sanding down to the metal- the more you can prepare, the better the new paint job will be. I still have to remove the top and the metal dash pieces, but it's getting there- I can hardly wait to see the end result! I'll try to update my pictures, but in the meantime, let's see some of your project, irishal! By the by, anyone out there brave enough to try the $50 paint job that was posted on the board a while back? Actually didn't look too bad on a Corvair, anyway!

I'm also curious to hear if anyone has tried that $50 paint job. I am seriously considering trying it on one of my cars that needs a repaint. Since it's coming to the beach with me (no garage and salty air) the rustoleum part is kind of appealing (no pun intended).
