water pump nuts (or lack thereof)

Hey everybody,

First off, I finally got the engine back in the car! I even did the "impossible" by leaving the trans in the car on the way in and on the way out. It took a bit of coaxing to get it back together, but I attribute that mostly to my lack of clutch alignment tool.

Anywho, I seem to have misplaced the two larger nuts on either side of the main coolant "channel" through the exhaust side of the motor. They're on the upper right corner of the WP (facing the front of the car, rightside up).

They're not the 6mm x 1.0 which are all over the timing cover and WP, and I couldn't find anything loose that would thread on correctly, so I couldn't just go take that to the HW store and match it.

Does anybody by chance happen to recall the size and thread pitch of those two lil buggers?

Mike

Yes, they're supposed to be 6 x 1.0mm. Perhaps someone at one time forced on an incorrect nut that buggered up the stud threads?

Wait, so *all* of the WP nuts should be 6mm x 1.00?

Hrm... I'll go double-check... I could have sworn it looked like the studs were too big for those...

Water Pumps.

Hi Mike,
Here is a picture of the backside of a 1600 101/105 pump I just rebuilt. Probably much like your 2 L. As you see the seven holes are for 7, 6 x 100 threaded studs on the 1600's. As the design is the same, or studs have been replaced by the CORRECT length bolts, they will still be 6 x 100 as Jim stated. If you need more pictures, let me know, I've a disassembled race engine sitting in my..... study.

It's possible they've been swapped out by a mechanic in the past or something, but they fit the gasket and WP perfectly. The 6mm x 1.00 won't even start to thread. These studs are simply too big.

In the first pic, the stud towards the bottom (without the nut on it) is one of the larger ones, and the one above it is a 6x1:

I'll wager that they're a 1/4 x 28.

Exclamation Yesturdai, Iz coldnnt spel mikkanique, an todai, I are 1 !

Agghhh! What sort of "mikkanique" does this sort of thing? Two winters ago I spent my spare "TV time" repairing a very nice veloce pan that had all the 6 X 100 studs to the block drilled out and tapped to 3/8 NC. ( *&&%$#!!)
