how to change upper and lower oil pan on 83 spider

I need to change the upper and lower oil pan on my 83 Alfa Spider Veloce and was wondering if I can do that without pulling the engine?

Yes, but you will have to loosen the motor mounts and jack the engine up to get enough clearance to remove the oil pan. I think you'll have to remove the oil pump as well.

Do you think this is better than to just bite the bullet and pull the engine?

Way easier than pulling the engine. Seems when I did it years ago, I just loosened the engine mounts at the crossmember, then used a jack to lift the engine from the bellhousing momentarily while I maneuvered the pan out. Some other guys may have some more recent experience and recommendations.

Be carefull putting things back. The lower pan bolt heads are easy to snap.

Can't help wondering?
What happened that you need to replace the upper/lower pan?

I know, don't say it; I'm the degenerate guy that slows down way to much to look at accidents.

Undo the engine mounts, jack up the engine a few inches and put a piece of 2"x4" under the mounts. Lower the engine on to the blocks and there will be enough clearance.
