spider tranny

Just got my 79 Spider back from Precision Imports in Virginia. They did a rebuild on my Delortto carbs and a bunch of other stuff. They told me they took a bunch of metal filings out of the tranny and changed the fluid. Not good. Pete could not guarantee how long the thing would last, although I am not experiencing any problems except excess noise. No syncro issues. My question is, what are my options? A rebuild or is there a source for rebuilt units. Any estimates on a rebuild?

If you never want to touch the tranny again, try Merritt Carden in California. He can lighten the gears and do a rebuild at the same time. About $400 for the lighten, $150 for the rebuild, plus whatever is needed in parts. You could have a beautiful shifing long lasting tranny for the investment of $600-800 or less for sure. Just a thought.

I'm definately living in the wrong part of the world to be a 'cheque book mechanic"! $150 is less than 2 hours labour, and I'm sure it takes a lot longer than that to remove, rebuild and reinstall a transmission! I was pleased that my rebuild "only" cost me about $1500... no lightening.

My rebuild cost $800, and I brought the tranny in (no removal, or installation costs). Works good now with good syncros, and stays in Reverse without popping out.

I've never seen a finished product of his but I've heard good things about him on this BB. I recommend him only from what I've read here. Conduct a search for gear lightening or Carden and see what pops up. It seems the cost of shipping would be worth it with his prices and reputation.
