All the way back 'round to the topic, I finally got off my bum and ended up getting one of those plates off licenseplates.tv with my actual plate # on it and made an 'underhang' bracket for it so that isn't even on the front of the bumper.

So far it's been a little over 3 weeks and all sorts of law types have seen it with no quibbles or complaints. (I 'think' it's because they can read it form further away than a regular plate, and at night the white parking light actually illuminates it a bit making for a sorta novel appearence)

I won't get too confident though until at least a month.

As an afterthought, and knowing I had the information somewhere, I went digging and came up with 'the' answer.

lgbalfa, click this link then locate and download CR-79 'NYS DMV Motor Vehicle Inspection Regulations' (it's a 1mb pdf document)

Go through it (search for 'plate' to make it quicker) and note that at no point in time in any of the NYS motor vehicle inspection do they even mention a front plate as an inspectable item, or even that there should be one present. (the only mention of a front plate deals with heavy cargo transports and the registration of such)

As in there's no legal reason for you to fail inspection without it.

In fact go through it all when you have time and discover all the things they don't, or rather can't, inspect to see if you've ever been boned by some underhanded shop trying to make a quick buck by telling you 'that fails inspection and we can't let you leave without fixing it'.

Agreed...

Not so much on my Alfa but on my other cars I'd rather not drill holes... on my non Alfa '87 I imported European bumpers for it and I'm sure not going to drill holes in those... On my daily diver I spent a bunch of $$$ to fill in and repaint the bumper skin to remove the holes the dealer put in. If I get stopped for no plate I'll break out the duct tape!

That said back to the Alfa. If it doesn't have holes in the bumpers from the factory or previous owner I wouldn't drill them either... I should take a look.

-Raffi

Duct tape is like the Force... it has a light side and a dark side and it binds the galaxy together

No, that would be chewing gum and bailing wire.

Duct tape came MUCH later in the timeline.

If you fail and need to attach it, just remove the rivits and use stainless bolts, lock washers and wing nuts to attach the brackets. I don't use the front plate in Jersey even though its required.
