Transmission Mount

Hey Everyone,
I am a new member, and owner of a 75 spider. I am going to replace my transmission mount, and wondered if anyone had any tips or shortcuts. Secondly, I have a set of cromodora wheels that I just sanded and polished. Does anyone know why they primed and painted them. It took some time and elbow grease, but they really look good once you get finished.

Thanks,
Chris

Welcome to the AlfaBB Chris!

To check out past threads on any subject, at the top of the page click on search and enter a topic. Try "guibo", "driveshaft", "center driveline bearing" as well as transmission mount. You'll see more info than you need but it's always nice to know a little more about your Alfa.
Yes, you can do it in place - reference mark anything you remove! If you've never dropped your driveshaft, now is a good time to do so and check the condition of all parts.

Wheels get painted to avoid the time and elbow grease you've just spent, again and again. The polished aluminum requires more frequent care to keep looking good than does the painted wheel.

I've been thinking of polishing mine as well. Would you mind posting a pic?

The transmission mount can be very difficult to get out unless you make a drift in the correct diameter and use a sturdy bolt. If you don't have that, you'll likely have to cut the rubber out and make a couple of cuts in the steel outer ring (without damaging the aluminum transmission casting).

Hey Chris:

Welcome to the Alfabb. If the wheels you polished out where Daytona style I imagine there were several reasons they didn't come from the factory that way. First and foremost, time. As you can now attest, it takes a tremendous amount of time to do up a set right. Second, some castings are better than others and many you will find are porous and really not suitable for polishing. Third, they would have to clear coat or come up with some other treatment to keep them from oxidizing. So be sure to do the same with yours to keep your effort from getting all oxidized.

Please be sure to share some pictures of your labor. I bet they do look great. I polished out the phonedials on my 92...but opted for chroming on my 78 for its daytonas. Here are a couple of shots. And again, welcome to the Alfabb.

Best Regards,
John M

If you're an AROC member, see if your chapter has a tool loan program. I'm a member of the New England chapter and was able to borrow the official Alfa tool for removing and installation of the transmission bushing and as you can imagine, having a specialized tool makes a big difference.
