Windshield repair

I have a pencil eraser sized star in my windshield and am wondering how to keep it that size. My windshield has the antenna builtin - and it works great too - and I'd rather not replace the whole windshield. Does anybody have experience with the numerous windshield repair vendors out there? If so, was it fixed to your satisfaction and what was the cost?

Antenna in the windshield??? Is that a factory installation or an aftermarket item? I like that! I want to weld up the hole in the quarter panel and have a hidden antenna.

My windshield has the internal antenna too. I did have a problem with the connector coming off, but the metalized epoxy for fixing heated rear windows (tab adhesive) fixed that. But I digress.

The local windshield shop (Pen Glass) fixed a nick in my windshield. They sent a van to the house and fixed me up, billing the insurance company directly (I have full glass coverage). Can't tell where the chip was anymore. They say they can fix cracks & stars, too.

Toptick - did the repair shop tell you how they fixed it and was there a warranty?

Bill77 - the antenna in the windshield was a factory item. I can't say, however, which model year they began incorporating the antenna in the windshield.

Didn't ask about a warranty, because it wasn't my money. I didn't watch them do the job (I wasn't there), but it entails an application of some sort of resin.

I looked at the PPG website Here and it says it not a fix for a "line of sight" repair. They say it takes a half hour or so.

Toptick - thanks for the link! Thankfully, it is not a line of sight issue for me.

The antennna in glass started in 1983 with the "duck tail" spiders. Up until 1992, the windshield tint was brown for the in-glass antenna windshields (I beleive it was green before that and after 1992).
