You can try some 'stop leak' additives in the cooling system but those are usually only a temporary repair (if it even works at all).
There is a gasket between the front cover and the engine block. Lots of stuff to remove to get to that gasket.
Have you made sure all the nuts holding the front cover are tight?

IIRC, the upper studs are extra long and pass through the front cover and the water pump.
Tighten the water pump nuts!

Is there no way of removing the front cover without removing the cylinder head?

Should be able to pull it without taking off the head.
The only thing that I'm aware of that hold the chaincase cover to the head are the two small bolts that go up into the front corners of the head.
However you'll definitely need to remove the crank pulley (duh) and most likely break the upper cam chain as the tensioner is part of the cover.

It might be possible to remove the timing cover with the head on but trying to install it without damaging the head and oil pan gaskets will be a challenge of the highest order. The proper way is to remove both the head and the upper oil pan.

The block casting looks a little different, but it's basically the same. The biggest differences were in the timing covers (spica, carbs, bosch, etc.).
