Interior Restoration Pictures

I know you all love pictures, so here you go! These are pictures of the interior restoration I've been working on in my spider. I put in new seats, new door panels, new steering wheel, shift knob, and shift boot. The carpet is still the original.

Looks great!

Where did you get the new stuff? The door pockets stay closed nicely. Did the new door panels include the door pocket hold-closed brackets?

Door Panels: I purchased material from Joanne Fabrics. The exact vinyl is Black Whisper. I reused the existing polyester padding. All of the plastic pieces are the originals, including the map pockets and the retaining hardware.

Seats: kit from world upholstery
Steering wheel: Lisa, from centerline
Shift knob: centerline
Leather boot: from IAP

It is part number SW310 from Centerline. Mahagonoy, no logos.

Oski_Bear, How you attached the new vinyl to the door panels? Is it glued down or somehow stapled to the back?

Hey Oski Nice job on the interior. I know you mentioned that you used all of the original door map pocket hardware, but did you happen across anybody who sells that stuff. I am in the middle of redoing my interior but I bought new door panels and they didn't come with the metal tabs that hook onto the pocket. I was able to buy new springs, but not the retaining tabs. It seems the original tabs are imbedded in the door panels.

To answer the question about how I held the door panels on:

The lower door panel upholstery is stapled to the wood board. I used 1/4" staples and made sure not to press too hard to prevent the staples from punching all the way through the other side. The thickness of the board and one layer of the black whisper vinyl is less than 1/4".

The thinner piece on the top is held on to the plastic trim with 3m spray pressure sensitive adhesive. You can buy a can for around $15.00 at autozone, kragen, and probably Napa.

About the map pocket springs. When I looked at mine, I believe they were simple sheet metal L-brackets that have slots in them. The spring slip over embedded sheet metal U channels. I took a picture of them earlier to aid with the assembly process. I'll try to dig that up tomorrow. Anyway, I did not search for a distributor that sells either of those pieces.

However, I think if you found an appropriate piece of sheetmetal you can bend it to the correct shape and cut it to the right size.

Your dash also appears to be pristine also, I can't see any cracks from my vantage point. Did you just luck out or did you also do some work up there?

Great Job.

It's always a morale booster to see someone actually finish a project. Well, our cars are never really finished, are they?

You have given me the inner strength to remove my door panels and try my hand at reupholstering. One door pocket hangs loose and the other is clipped in nicely. Your tips on this point are very handy. Thanks for the photos and advice.

Congratulations.

on my '91 spider one door pocket flaps around, what is supposed to hold it in place? I see some sort of bracket but not much else....

Paul, i'll post pictures later tonight. But basically, there is a flexible L bracket that acts as a spring. When The map pocket opens the bracket is deflected and pulls the pocket back in to it's original position.

Your bracket may be bent, at which point you can bend it back. If your bracket is broken, I can suggest creating a new one out of similar sheet metal.
