Windshield Radio Antenna Repair

The antenna in my 86 S3 Spider broke off at the connector on the base of the windshield . I have about 1/2 inch of thin wire coming out of windshield. Is the antenna ground supposed to connect at the windshield also??

Is this repairable? OR - do I have to mount an external antenna - and drill a 1" hole in my fender!

Further on antenna

Seems that the reason antenna did not work is that the center terminal on plug to radio is shorted to ground, that is both center and outside of plug connect to the antenna grid. I assume they should be insulated from each other.

There is a connector under dash behind glovebox that may be the culprit. Unfortunately I pulled wire out of windshield while testing it, so I will have to find some epoxy or low temp solder to fix this after I remove glovebox.

This must have been repaired before by PO. Other cars have a button connector on windshield, mine had a wire .
