Question 88 Graduate Blown Fuel Pump Fuse

My 88 Graduate would not start. I have a blown Fuel Pump Fuse. Will check fuel pump and the voltage at the drive relay. Possibly main relay. Is there anything else I should check? Fuse melted right through fuse housing! Any help appreciated before I have to replace or repair pump.

Don,

Check for :

- Corrosion at fuse holder contacts : Clean. You may also change the fuse holder;
- Pump jammed (rust particles, etc. ) : Replace (I replaced mine a week ago and the car is now running);
- Short circuits : Repair

Preventive actions :

- Change your fuel filter;
- Check for rust, debris, etc. in your tank.

Good luck

Check for shorts in the feed wire. If nothing, then it's likely that your fuel pump is well toasted.

When I replaced my fuse holder, I went with the flat, two-prong knife type fuse and holder. The holder is a thick rubber thing, with an air-tight cap. I was really pleased with it... Fuses blow for a reason, and I searched high and low for what the cause of my short was... I could not find anything, but all evidence (car stalled immediately upon hitting a puddle, and once it was eventually re-started, would simply refuse to run for any length down a rain-soaked road) pointed to the little rubber caps not covering the fuel pump contacts... I think that their exposure was the root of all problems. After cleaning them off and covering them correctly, then repairing the fuse holder, the car has ran like a top (actually seemed to have better performance than before)... Hope all goes well for you...

-Dave.
