Air conditioner won't blow

I have a 1991 S4 spider and the A/C won't blow air. the guy that I purchased the car from had the compressor replaced and it seems like there is cold air seeping from the vents. I can hear the fan working and it sounds ok, maybe a little loud but not bad. Still no air. has anyone experienced this problem?

Are you getting any flow out of the two side vents (near the doors)? That's where most of the A/C airflow should come from.

The three center vents are fed by two small tubes from the A/C box that are small and prone to getting detached, so not getting much flow out of the center is pretty typical.

Unhappy No flow

There is little or no air coming from either the center or side vents. I am wondering if there is a blockage or loose hose and believe that the only way to find out is to remove the dash. That's not good.

Are you sur the compressor is cycling, and there is a cold evaporator inlet tube(you know, the copper lines where the expansion valve is)?? You can tell by feeling for that "cold" tube under the dash, under the glove box...

I think it is common for these vent tubes to become loose, and become disconnected. Yes, removing dash is a pain......

I agree if you can hear the fan and their is no air or not much air it has to be a disconnected tubing? But how likely is that?

For the compressor to turn on you have to have a min pressure in the system. I trouble shot mine last summer when the fan wouldn't turn on and found a disconnected ground wire by the shift column. After connecting it the fan came on and there was plenty of air flow just not cold......need to charge it.

Heres a pic of the ground maybe yours is lose?

Doubtful it's an issue with the compressor. The blower fan will work with the switch even if the compressor is not working. My system is completely depressurized and I can still blow air out the vents.

Pic of the tubing is below. As you can see, there's four tubes that connect to the air box (one to each side vent, two to the center vents). I can't imagine they're all loose or blocked, so my guess is that it's an issue with the blower itself.

The blower is in the top of the passenger footwell. Are you sure it's turning when you turn on the fan? The sound you're hearing might be the compressor in the engine bay, I suppose. Get down there and play with the switch and see if you can figure out if the fan is working properly - that's your most likely culprit.

This post is old enough that I may be too late to help you, but I would caution don't jump to conclusions and start changing parts. Using a meter check for electric power on both sides of the fan switch with the fan on. It is easy to jump to conclusions and start changing out expensive components when the problem is a corroded fuse or a loose connection on a fuse, or even a bad ground wire as mentioned earlier. Effective trouble shooting before buying parts is always the way to go.
