Valve adjustment - Assembly Lube

Hey guys,

I'm in the middle of a valve adjustment on my '90 Spider. I was talking to a couple of guys at work about it a few minutes ago and a point of contention came up. Should I use just oil or should I use assembly lube on the cam bearings? It's been a number of years since I've done a twin-cam valve adjustment. I was thinking that I just used oil and assembly lube was only needed for a new cam or new bearings. But as the discussion went on I started doubting myself. I'm sure I'll probably find the answer in my service manual when I get home - but what's your opinion?

Thanks,

Chris

It couldn't hurt to use assembly lube, but oil is all your engine ever sees now, and it's what I use. Cam bearings are not super-stressed, but the lobes and tappets need all the help they can get.

I used engine oil straight from the container.
After all, other than a different shim here or there, you are just re assembling the original parts, which were all marked and kept in sequence, yes?

This is also a good time to do a retorque of the head....consider it.

Yep, already retorqued the head.

Y'all are thinking along the same lines I am. We had the conversation and this guy kept insisting that I had to use assembly lube. It's been about five years since I did one and I used to do a lot of rebuilding of two-stroke motors so I would have had some assembly lube on hand (probably still do now that I think of it) - so then I started thinking "well, maybe I did use it.....".

Thanks guys!

Chris
