Unhappy S3 1988 spider

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a new user to this forum

Have a S3 spider, just purchased, and was running rough on tickover. In haste, I undid the distributor clamp and moved the timing , now the car wont start. The distributor does not contain points. How can I re-set the timing to start the car please.

Also, have noticed that the vacum pipe is split. Could this be the cause of the car running rough at idle

Thanks Folks

Welcome to the BB!

You will find answers to your questions in the write-up "BOSCH L-JETRONIC FUEL INJECTION IDLE ADJUSTMENT, DIAGNOSTIC AND TUNE UP PAGE for USA models of Alfa Romeo Spiders 1982-1989". Section 8 will tell how to set the timing, and a split vacuum hose will definitely cause a rough idle. The write-up goes over all of this.

Best regards,

Sorry, I thought you had a series 3 Bosch EFI Spider, which us what was imported to the U.S... EFI and carbs deliver fuel in a very different manner, although it's just a different way of feeding fuel into the engine, but still the write-up is for Bosch L-Jet... You may want to post in what part of the world you are located and whether your series 3 has a 2 liter or a 1.6 liter engine.

Best regards,

Yep that'll make a big difference.

Is the dist. a Bosch self contained electronic unit? Usually Bosch has a mark on the dist body and a mark on the tip of the rotor. With the engine at TDC for #1 cyl, those marks should align for basic timing. On the Bosch EFI cars that's all that's needed. Since your's is not EFI you may have to further adjust with a timing light.

BTW no matter what fuel system your car has, fix the vacuum leaks. Vacuum leaks are nothing but valve burning trouble.

I think it is

The distributor just has a rotor arm inside and a dust plate. Excuse my basic knowledge

There is a mark on the side of the distributor which appears to be for setting the timing

I wish I had left it alone as the car was at least running!!!!

Thanks for the help guys

The mark is probably for setting the timing, and it isn't hard to do, but I would hate to just guess... I would suggest you get the appropriate manual on CD from Cardisc.

Best regards,
