Bypass hose question

Well, the waterpump is in and I am hooking up radiator hoses. Question:

1) What is the brass ball in my old bypass hose? Is it necessary I place it in the new one?

2) Please let me know if I have everything right. Top waterpump port to bypass and bottom of water intake manifold, middle one to heater core passenger side, bottom port to bottom of radiator. Top of water intake manifold to top of radiator, drivers side heater core to the fitting on back passenger side of the head.

Sound right?

Thanks,
Quinn

Congrats!

1) that's the coolant bypass restrictor. And yes, put it into the new hose. There's a brief write up about the restrictor here.

2) sounds right to me

Thanks Papjam, you 'da man. That write-up is interesting as I had no idea that restrictor was in there. Any tricks on getting it in place? I notice my new hose is widened at the point it is to rest, but getting it there appears to be quite a chore.

I used a box cutter and cut a slit in the old hose to remove the restictor. Lube it up with some soap or spit and push it in.

Is this restrictor present on a S4 spider? I replaced my coolant bypass hose this spring, but I don't recall seeing a brass restrictor in the old hose.

I don't think so. As far as I know, they were only on the SPICA cars.

I replaced my bypass hose last year on my 86 and I had a restrictor. So they must have made it at least into the S3 cars.

The parts book confirms NoodleRoni that the restrictor, part number 60518394, was indeed fitted to the S3 Spiders. This part number however, does not show up in the S4 numerical listing nor did I see, at a quick glance, anything that looked like it could be a restrictor in the pic of the S4 cooling system parts breakdown. So I'd have to say Saguaro_Nate that your Spider does not have a restrictor.
