How much clutch?

In the fifty years I've owned cars, and on the 54 cars I've owned (mostly sports cars) I've replaced about 10 clutches. In every case but one, I replaced all three parts because "while you're there you might as well". In almost every case I wondered why I was putting in a new pressure plate, as they mostly looked just fine. Well, I've found a rebuilt Alfa disk, but no plate or throw-out. How often do these pieces give up? Any experience out there?
