'86 spider jumps in 1st gear, dies when idle..
hey guys,
my car started acting weird yesterday..
it jumps in first gear, i have to drive it very heavy on the clutch (until I shift to 2nd) or it starts acting like a jackhammer.
it backfires a lot..
when i come to a stop and don't throttle the gas, it dies.. the battery light usually flashes before it dies.
what could this be? I took it to my mechanic last week to have it checked out and he said it was fine..
he did switch out the tail pipe, because there was a hole in the old one.. but it's hard to imagine that could have anything to do with it.
any ideas? thanks!

HUM... did the air hoses become disconencted? when that happens the car runs like crap (bucks, stalls) until you reach high gears/speed.

False air (intake air leaks) would be my first guess.
Is the wire harness connector to the AAV connected?
Check all the stuff in the L-jet diagnosis page (link below).

First - visually. Look for hoses that have cracked or fallen off.
Next, physically. Squeeze and yank on the hoses to see if any are loose or deteriorated.
Finally, you can listen (if it'll run somewhat). Use a piece of hose about 18" long like a stethescope - hold one end near your ear and aim the other end at any suspect areas to listen for leaks.

I'm suprised nobody has also suggested finding a new mechanic.:

Well, he said he took it to the mechanic last week and it started acting up yesterday. Probably not something the mechanic did.

Yeah, I don't think it was my mechanics fault.. I guess he could have gone over the hoses to check up on their condition, but I didn't ask him about that specifically.
I'll check it out in the morning (as soon as the sun goes up) and report back with what I find..
Thanks again!

Sorry, I must have misunderstood the original post. I read, Dot had the problem first then took it to her mechanic.

Our cars are very sensitive to 'false air' - leaks in the intake ducts or hoses connected to the intake. Such leaks bypass the AFM (Air Flow Meter) thus the computer doesn't know how much air the engine is taking in and can't send the proper signals for fuel to inject. "GIGO"
Which hose was loose?

It was actually the Air duct. I mis-typed.
I just tightened the screws and now it's like new.
