Does the hub mount cause the wheel to be closer to the driver than the stock mount? I like the Nardi wheel but I've heard that some of the wheels are less "dished" than the stock wheel, which results in the aftermarket wheel being too far away from the driver.

Spider: Good choice!

Bill: I replaced mine with the Nardi Classico which has the polished aluminum spokes with the wood rim. I didn't take any before/after measurements, but the wheel did not feel materially closer or farther away. The relatively thicker rim does provide for better feel and grippability compared with the stock wheel.

Edit: Not aluminum, but stainless steel

as canguro says, you dont seem to feel any diffance from the stock wheel and the nardi. the only thing i did notis, is the nardi feels better in the hand.

I got that same wheel off Ebay. I assume you got it from melaniaone?

It really looks much, much better than the stock wheel that they put on my '86. I really dislike the stock wheel. I think that was a horrible design touch for a good looking car.

Was there some sort of safety regulation that required them to change the steering wheel from wooden to hideous?

Just for reference, the stock Personal wheel on my '83 Spider is 5.5" deep, measured from the base of the wheel to a straightedge laid across the wheel at the center. If folks could measure their after market wheels (with the adapter hubs included), I would be grateful since I'm looking for a smaller wheel but I don't wnat teh wheel to be farther away from thr driver than the stock one. TIA.

I checked my aftermarket nardi wheel, the same one spider's got, and with the hub adapter it is about 4.5 inches deep. It is also about an inch and a half smaller in diameter which gave me a bit of extra legroom too.

I see you have an 83 spider.

The hub adapter I have is for an 86 so it should be the same one that fits on your 83. There is a different adapter for 87 onward according to the ebayer. I thought that since 86 had the interior change that that would be the year for the hub adapter switch, but I guess that's not the case.

Oh, in addition, I really never noticed the smaller dish of the wheel either. But I am a reasonably tall guy so it didn't really affect me very much. (6'2") I don't think that it really is enough to make much of a difference.
