From my experience don't do anything to the car away from home that you don't have to do. If you end up with an unintended surprise, like a stripped drain plug, it's more difficult, expensive, & time consuming to deal with the problem away from home.

Forgive me if I'm missing something here, but why ask others to measure the size of the boot of a car which is presumably the same size as that of your own car sat on your own driveway?

Eh, contained in what are going to carry 8 quards of oil. 2 5 q cans ?
I Amsoil is so important, get a 1 or 2 smaller truncks.
But are you sure the Spider have been running on sync oil. If not, it's not at good idea to start just before a long journey. Old grunck in the oil pan and canal might work loose and block oil ways in important places.
Just my 2 cents
Erik

He doesn't have a Spider sitting in his driveway... He's flying to a different city to pick-up one he just purchased...

Best regards,

Okay okay youve all talked me out of it. Ill make the switch to synthetic oil when I get home.

The reason Im so nuts for amsoil is that our other alfa mechanic in Chicago Eric (the other being Mike Besic sp?), used only amsoil racing formula in his racecar - he found that when he would break the engine down after a race to be rebuilt for the next race he if he used amsoil he would almost have nothing to replace. Everything was still in great shape. Now, if he used other oils he found a LOT more noticeable wear internally.

Ever since then I have just always used amsoil in all my cars.

Jeff

Depends on the size of the rust hole. No rust hole, simple, not deep enough.

When I flew to San Francisco from Arkansas to pick up my 164S the PO had changed oil and filter, replaced fuel filter and wiper blades. Maybe you could negotiate something. Take a minimal assortment of tools instead, but not the rollaway box. You may want or need to do minimal repairs in the motel parking lot, like tightening a hose clamp or cleaning electrical contacts. Take it easy and get to know the car. These trips are great adventures.

Well the story gets a lil interesting... A BB member just checked the car out for me. He said it looked like it just came off the showroom floor (fantastic). However, he said it was popping out of 2nd gear and reverse - ahhhhhh!
Whats weird is the original owner has never had it come out of 2nd gear - only reverse...

I talked to Mike Besic (sp?) my mechanic in Chicago, he told me it might need the trans replaced, but it could simply be a worn trans mount. Centerline here in town had them in stock so I bought a trans mount and 2 left side motor mounts - they were out of right side ones but told me how to make a left side one work.

The shop Im getting the car checked at should be able to do the swap for me while its on the lift - yea.... Keep your fingers crossed for me!!!!!

At 80 mph, you won't need second gear (or reverse)....

If all else fails you can shift from 1st to 3rd as often as possible and avoid 3rd to 2nd downshifts. It sucks to drive like that. There is a good chance that mount replacement will solve the problem. It sure looks like a nice car, and the top looks good!

The top apparently has a small tear in it - but thats okay! Ill either restitch it or patch it with a piece of canvas and redye the top

That 2nd gear thing might just be a misaligned console. (finnerscrossed)
