I use the jaw type thing - looks like a pair of pliers on steroids.
Once I get a little bit of movement in the un-do direction then it'll come off by hand.
Sure is a pain-in-the-butt to have to remove the air filter housing to be able to access the oil filter. At least the air filter gets checked every 3,000 miles and some dirt knocked off of it.

This is the style I generally have luck with:
The hoop style can work too, provided you can find one that's got a narrow enough hoop to slip between the end of the filter and the chassis rail.

Have you tried going in from underneath at the front?
If you can get in there, you don't need to take any of that apart.

We're still talking about Alfa's, right...
I have never been able to access the filter and actually remove it from underneath. I can reach it and maybe turn it but I couldn't remove it and snake it out. Guess my paws are too big. (and that's all I'll tell you about my anatomy)

Hmm I have small hands - I really dont remember having to take the airfilter off to get to the oil filter though - I thought I could access it by jacking the car up no?

Must be one of those mini-frisbees you get in a bottom of a cereal (or CrackerJacks) box.

I thought of another item you should probably obtain prior to your drive home. Get some new fuses.

Our '84 Spiders have the 'bullet' style fuses - not always/easily available. And these fuses especially are known to look OK but somehow fail anyway. I suggest you get a handful of 8 amp & 16 amp bullet fuses and a small wire brush (the size of a toothbrush). Pull all the fuses, clean the terminals and then install all new fuses (plus keep a few spares just in case).
