Custom ipod install

a couple of pics of my ipod install in Lolita. It took a couple of days, a good amount of grunt work...and very little customization to the dash (just one notch...nothing is visible when the ashtray is put back).

This is similar to what I'm planning for my '79. Did you wire up any power leads or is this simply a holder?

One other (not as elegant) solution is by Audiovox. It is a splice method that hardwires you through the antenna. The cool thing is that it has a little switch to turn off your antenna so you don't get interference. This is what my dad did in his merceds.

Oh, and it doesn't matter how close the iTrip is to the radio. Maybe getting closer to the antenna, but that shouldn't matter too much except in cities. This is one of those products with the weird success stigma - like knowing you're popular because of all the VDs you have, the iTrip is showing its popularity by interfering with itself in big cities. That combined with overloaded radio bands makes for a difficult situation.

Neotrant, I spliced off the lighter socket and wired up a Griffin power pod. The difficulty is that the plug into the back of the dock interferes with the power window switches. Using a dremel tool, I cut away some of the plastic on the switches...keeping them functional and shoe horning in the powered doc.

The iTrip works great for me (even with a below average head unit that is about 7 years old. On the drive from Ottawa to Manchester N.H. I had to change frequencies 2 times, but reception is great. For those having problems, it may have to do with the location of your antenna. VW's often have the antenna in the back of the car...and they are shielded. This can pose problems.

The other option is to use the audio out function on the idoc and hard wire it to the aux input in the stereo. The only disadvantage to this is, when you remove the ipod to change or add songs...the music will stop.

I wrapped it in electrical tape just to be safe. So far..so good.

Both switches have been modified, because I had one too many beer and modified the wrong switch first.

Very clean installation. I've got the cassette adaptor and the Belkin power to the cig lighter wires running all over. It works very well but I'd like something hidden like yours.

Wow, forgot about this thread...one thing I found out about iTrip...it really makes a difference with what windshield you have in our car. I drive a 2000 Chevy Blazer for work, and it doesn't work worth a darn through the tinted window. I haven't tried it in my Verde, because I use the tape adapter...same with our other car. Nice install though!

When I get the car stuff settled, I'll have to get a new head unit with an aux/in line and just plug it straight in that way. Sounds way better.
