The adrenalin rush from driving your Alfa should have been enough to keep you warm no mater what the outside temperature was.

odometer

Happy to hear that the heater system finally bled itself. That is precisely what mine did a few years ago.
Actually the odometer is a much easier fix than that heater system.
Just disconnect the cable at the tranny and from the back of the odometer. More than likely the cable is poo poo kaa kaa. Just replace the cable.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has had hot air issues. The spedo works fine other than the fact that it reads 20 mps when standing still. From what I have researched, I think that the odometer has to come out and be rebuilt.

Look real close at the speedo face. Our '84's speedo (twin pod instruments vs the mono-pod in your model) has a needle rest at 5 mph. Maybe the mono-pod has a needle rest at 20 mph?

Stopped @ 20mph!

Thank you. Upon a closer look my '89 Veloce spedo has a needle stop at 20 mph. Everything is cool!

My heat isn't working either in my '84 Spider. Fan blows great, but nothing warm even though my temp gauge is at a solid 180. Should I try a plain old radiator flush first?

PS: I'm new to the forum and am resurrecting a lot of old threads based on the fact that, after 10 years, I finally own an Alfa again!

After you look to see if the heater hoses are actually connected (one of those 'simple fixes' for a leaky core: disconnect the hoses and bypass it all together), check to ensure your heater valve is actually opening to allow the hot coolant to get into the heater core. (located kinda straight up from the gas pedal)

If it seems to be working, then yes, a backflush of the heater core may be in order.

Hot Air Mystery

I flushed the heater core on my '89 veloce spider and got out some black gunk that was plugging it for sure. The valve was working fine. I was not able to back flush it for some reason. There may be something still caught in the line. I bled the system acording to the book and was still not able to get any heat out of it. After driving it a few hundred miles, miraculously the heat began to flow. The "self-bleeding" theory is the only viable explanation.
