new to spiders new to alfa's new to web site

hi i am new to these sexy little cars... I have been a British car devote until recently.I still love the smell of a brit sports car or garage...the remenants of oil and gas in the proper combination!!!! in hindsight it must be addictive if not pleasurable!!otherwise why would i continue to fix something every spring when i would roll out mt triumph's!
I have over the last 6 months bought 3 alfa's mostly because the price was right and also i sat behind the wheel of my buddies 86 spider this summer!!they say your first is your most memorable..i'd say!! i am 6'3" and 225 my buddy is 330 and we are both comfy in the little car!!
so i found a 87 milano from az. for $1,000 no rust new ricaro seats ,it had a shifting problem and clear fluid leaking from the clutch slave so i hoped for bad hydrolics..
after trans fluid change and conditioner it is alot better shifting, still bad into 2nd and third at medium RPMs down shifting int o 3rd and 2nd only when warm and low rpms. hoping it gets better as i drive it to work as it is my new driver as the daughter has the woody wagon now..
The middle of november and the sale of my tr4a and i had to buy this 84 spider i had found 5 hours away.. it was under $3,000 2 owner and well cared for.
It's test drive was the 5 hour ride home in the cold and dark. I had planned on towing it but it ran so well and was so reasonable i towed a 72 mgb and the spider was put to the test!!with a ton of spare mg parts and a cell phone and credit card as our only back up we made it home with no incidents!
Before the money was gone and to soon for logic or experience to kick in i found another charcoal 84 for the same price . on the way back from a delivery..
this one was somewhat misrepresented but was in an inheritance and is titled to the original owner.I expected some issues. the only one so far is large i suspect.. oily sludge in the opening of the radiator!! the dip stick oil seams clear of coolant and it runs nice only small amount of light water oil from the exhaust.
when i pulled the plugs they were crusty black .. the recessed plug areas had fresh oil in them .owner said it had a leaky valve cover..
any suggestions as to the likely problem due to the lack of history except lack of proper up keep!

Any help with these new toys is welcome!!
every experience good or bad is help for the future of better driving!!

you can check out my amateur web site here for a grin.

Welcome to the BB I too have always like British sport cars even though I have never owned one. The TR-6 is my favorite but I have always like the look of the Spitfire too.

Have you ever owned a Spitfire?

Nice collection, you'll do well on this site
My brother's have had Spitfires and the Tr4's and 4A's. They started the alfa addiction.

Welcome to the forum, I am sure all your questions will get answered.
I started in sports cars with a 57 MGA, then Triumphs. I did love them but you wil find the Alfa is a more solid car and very reliable if you keep driving them.My Alfa hates to sit for long periods of time.

I started with an MG but then I wanted to drive at night with lights AND windsheild wipers at the same time and bought an Alfa!!

I had a 1970 MG Midget, soooo much fun. I even drove it on I75 from Dayton to Cincinnati and back to Dayton........once. Back road cruiser after that!!!

Welcome to the BB!

In South Africa their is a great (friendly) rivalry between Alfas and MG's.Back home I wouldn't dream of parking next to a MG.
