Question Rusty Fuel Tank Filler Neck - Substitute Replacement?

I found the source of the rust garbage in my fuel tank (the tank itself looks great). The spring loaded flap in the filler neck is solid rust. The actual filler neck pipe is OK so I thought about just removing the flap assembly but it appears to be welded and is not easy to get at. Accidently putting in the larger leaded fuel spout is no longer an issue anyway.

I doubt I can find a new replacement, so has anyone "converted" or adapted a filler neck from another (newer) vehicle of any make? Otherwise, I may just weld the existing threaded section and the mounting bracket to some stock 2 1/4" pipe.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

Why not call Alfa Parts Exchange and ask if they have a cleaner fuel filler? Fabricating one sounds like a lot of work - this should be a fairly common part.

I have one from a 1976 spider. If it will fit you can have it for $10.00. I am in nc so shipping should not cost much. Ed Thomas

I removed the little flap thing from the filler neck in our '84 Spider. IIRC, I bent a couple of prongs to allow me to slide the 'hinge pin' sideways and maneuver the flap (and the remnants of its spring) out.
