Changed wires, cap, plugs, rotor. It seemed to run out of power too soon and didn't idle too well. (Of course the Shankle EG rally grind on the cams made it sound like a drag car at idle. The HC at idle were around 4000 ppm The engine seemed to fall on its face at around 7 grand.

Long story short. I finally called some one at MSD. The guy I spoke to was very sharp. He says the MSD has TOO much spark for the Small Alfa dizzy cap. It was jumping spark across the inside of the cap causing spark to reach cylinders that weren't ready for spark. I went back to the OE set up using the MSD Blaster coil. The Idle improved, the HC at idle dropped to 2900ppm. (The cams )
The engine was able to pull hard at over 8000 rpm (had it to 9400 at an auto-x once. Oops)
I would install the Jacobs if I had a choice.I installed one on a buddys Toyota truck and it made a world of difference. Power, mileage, etc improved.
I think Jacobs is more modern and up to date.

To Paul:

I, like Erik, have been running the MSD 6AL for several years. I think it was probably just the box malfunctioning Paul. Erik and I are proof of that. I have had it triggered off the points distributor as well as the LED RML unit. The MSD guy looking to blame the car rather than his box.

To Mark:

Come on up then!!!!

To Erik:

Check out these. I wonder if the difference is from the stock system falling off at upper rpms. What do you think?

Touche'! You nailed that one! Though, not being argumentative, I don't have the latest one, I specifically went out and found an original Jacobs Pro Street. The latest ones being made now don't have the features and Mr Gasket cut even more corners as far as quality.

That actually is a very common problem that is listed on their tech forums at MSD, smaller distributor caps *can* cause arc over inside the cap. What I like about the jacobs system (amongst the many of things) is that the spark is controlled, hotter spark as engine load increases, full throttle switch to engage the systems full output, etc...

It is clear something was wrong, but he did say he had a V6, not a 4 banger like us. All is possible, it hurts to even ponder it all...

I love how that first link actually made refernce to the design of the head and advancing the timing were related. That is usually over looked, a more turbulent head hates advancing, but loves and uses more volts to fire the plug under load. That is more than likely why they got such a good gain in power with the electronic set up-hotter spark to go along with a turbulent head.

I sold it to a VW guy for his drag car for 25.00 and it worked flawlessly on his car. Just the wrong application.

David,
Could you explain what sort of performance gains your expecting over the stock Motronic ignition that came with your car?
