Battery charger for storage
Can anyone recommend a good battery charger for winter storage that won't boil my battery?

I just picked up a 1.5 amp charger with a "float" feature. keeps the battery at full charge and cuts off and starts again automaticly. Cost about 30 bucks at autozone.

BatteryMINDer is the device you need to keep your batteries up to par with out boiling out the fluid.

Every once in a while, JC Whitney, Northern Tools, or Harbor Freight sell a simple one of these devices for $7.49. Cheap enough to have one for every car, the riding mower, the generator, ...
They've always worked fine for me, and the price is right!

I'm not unfamiliar with battery chargers and charging regiments. Owning a cruising sailboat with a large (600 amp hr+) bank has taught me the value of sophisticated and very expensive multistage chargers and monitoring computers. I was having a hard time believing that these small inexpensive chargers actually worked. Maybe the old adage that everything "marine" is unnecessarily expensive is true. Thanks for all the advice, I just ordered a "battery tender".

Well, if something fails on a boat, or a plane, the stakes are a little higher.
As for the cheapies, I don't think the circuitry is all that complicated to detect when a battery is getting overcharged. Also, they are not going deliver a ton of current and charge your battery in an hour. They might take a week or more to fully charge a battery.
As a trickle charger, to keep a battery from draining, they work fine for me.

The best battery charger
Hello,
I have had motorcycles for years and have gone through my share of batteries. At the present time I have seven motercycles all of which have chargers on 24 / 7. I even have a small generator on a charger. Any of my cycles or equipment will start with no problem at any time. Best of all I no longer buy battries. The charger that I use is a Optimate. Check out the website. I have also included a website for the best deep cycle battery money can buy. I hope that this helps

I realize that some folks believe that Harbor Freight stuff is rubbish, but this charger has worked fine for years.

I also have had excellent success with the inexpensive Harbor Freight maintainers - on sale frequently for ~$7. I've been using them for 3 years, have about 6 or 7 of them on various batteries for cars, lawn tractor, small 12 volt utility batteries, etc.

Immediate gratification...go to Walmart. Black and Decker was about $18.00 and comes with a plug set up to attach to the battery...just unplug and drive, the charger/maintainer stays pluged in to an outlet at home.
