Power mirror problem

Well, it's this way....I finally got the power mirrors working. The DPO had disconnected the wire from the fusebox and shoved it way up into the wiring loom (what was this guy smoking?). Only problem is that they only motor in & out - not up & down. Kind of odd - when I move the switch toggle stick right & left, that's the way the glass moves. When I move the stick up & down - the glass moves left & right! I pulled the back off the lt. side and it looks like the motor unit is a sealed assy. (If it were the switch, I would think that moving the stick up & down would result in no movement of the glass.) Anybody got a tip on where I go from here in my trouble-shooting trail
