This doesn't exactly (or really, at all) answer your question as to how to use a c clamp and pvc but here is a thread started by me showing how I used a Free rental valve spring compressor and a 22mm O2 socket to do my springs.
You'll find the pictures on the 10th reply down on the thread.

Bianchi,
Sorry I am responding late in the day, but, it was me who mentioned the PVC/washer idea about 2 wks ago, during my head gasket job, but the C clamp part of it is credited to someone else, I don't remember. Anyway, take a 1" ID white PVC coupling, about 2" long to begin with, (at home depot, cut it about 3/4" long, then cut out about 1/3 of its circumference out, so as to create a slit in it. Then I took a large steel washer slightly larger than the OD of the PVC, and cut out the same 1/3 out of the washer, then place on top of the pvc, and this is your "depressor" tool, with a little "window" through which you can insert some tweezers to extract the keepers. It will slide around, so you may want to glue it with some PVC cement, and it will hold somewhat. Good Luck. Let me know how it works. It did the job for me.
Joe
