Fuel Pump in 82 Spider

Hey Everyone,

I was wondering, how important is it to replace the fuel pump in an 82 spider veloce if it is humming all the time and experience loss of fuel delivery when driven for a while. I am going on a 220 mile drive from Houston to Austin tomorrow morning and I was wondering will I experience any bad problems to my car. The fuel delivery problem occurs when warm when I am shifting from first to second. I will be in 5th gear for the majority of my drive.

Also, is there a fuel pump in the tank, as well as the one fixated underneath the car by the passenger rear wheel? If anyone has any pointers on replacing the fuel pump I would greatly appreciate it. Also, what kind of pump do you reccommend replacing the one I have with? Where do you get a new one from? Bascially any information regarding the fuel system would be greatly appreciated. I am just nervous about this b/c the fuel system is very integral to the overall performance of the spider.

Thanks,

Alfisto Nikolas

I just saw this post, and I really hope that you didn't take off with a failing fuel pump. You may be in for a very frustrating and most extended drive, struggling with any incline when you least expect it, etc.

Spiders have a fuel pump inside the tank, and another outside the tank, in the places you have described. There are several threads on the BB covering the fuel pumps, and also a suppliers list on the general forum "Anything about Alfa Romeos and Alfabb.com"...

Best regards,

I'd check the fuel filter first - but then again, at 25 years, if it's all orig., replacing pumps - tank/outside/filter and checking all fuel lines ( replace them as well ) - ain't a bad idea, as long as there's a budget for the "all at once" solution...
Won't have to worry about that problem creeping up again for quite a while...

Thanks guys, I decided not to take it with me to austin. I'll have to one day go in with a fine toothpick and fix the fuel system. Time is the restraint. Money can be made haha. Once I have a chance I will replace the whole system. Especially the tank...The previous owner had it sit for 5+ years or so outside. So who knows what corrosion and particles and sediments are built up.

You may also want to try some Techron first. I would do two applications. It's the only product that I can say really works.

Best regards,
