Thumbs up Fuel Pump Alternatives

I'm looking for the latest, authoritative info on alternative fuel pumps for Spica cars. Does anyone have experiance with:

Master E2000?
Pythons?

Fuel Pump

I replaced my 1969 1750 Spider tank fuel pump (Spica) with a Bosch pump applicable to earlier 3 series BMW's.

You also might like to consider Mitsuba fuel pumps, they seem to have a good reputation and are a common after-market alternative to e.g. Facet.

Master E2000

I installed a Master E2000 yesterday, purchased from the local Autozone. I figured that if it did not work, I could put the pump aside for some other application.

The pump is for a Ford F-150 and installs in the stock mounting clamp. However, once in place it would not prime. (My spider does not have the in-tank helper pump) So I disconnecter the supply line at the tank and filled it with fuel and reconnected. The car started, but the pressure light never extinguished and it was obvious that the engine was not getting enough fuel.

I have resinged myself to purchasing a proper replacement pump, however I was wondering if I installed a low-pressure Facet pump (Which I have on the shelf) before the E2000, would this keep the system primed and deliver adequate pressure?

Thoughts? Ruminations?

John, is that Ford pump for a FI system? Most (all, as far as I know) FI systems need much higher fuel pressures than carburetted systems. And different FI systems typically specify a rather narrow range of fuel pressures for proper operation.

It wouldn't surprise me to find an alternate Bosch fuel pump that'd work in our Alfas. But that wouldn't likely save much money.

Fuel Pump

I'll repeat my earlier response to this fuel pump inquiry.

My 1969 1750 Spider, equipped with Spica injection and the original electric tank pump, also Spica, works great with a Bosch replacement from an early BMW 325 (I believe E-30).

I had to improvise on some of the mounting but it was easy and the results are great.

John you need a replacement pump that puts out at least 35-40 psi... for our spiders.. A little higher for the spica cars...The Ford applications usually require about 20 psi with an assistor pump.

John,

I'm assuming that this is for your 78 Spider. Does the fuel line to your filter and pump exit the bottom or the top of the tank? If it's from the bottom you shouldn't need a booster pump and the E2000 should probably work. Have you replaced your fuel filter between the tank and the pump? Depending on the condition of your tank, the rear filter can fail in just a few weeks. Even if you've replaced the filter recently I'd remove it and compare the resistance to a new one. If your fuel feed is from the top of the tank a low pressure booster might help but I've never tried it.
