Well, the future is now. John M, Budsy, Enrique and Dee and I ran Spiders at the local SCCA solo event yesterday. Seven timed runs allowed for considerable drama, amplified by the failure of Enrique's secret weapon. For our three normal competitors (Dee and I try to stay out of this conflict) the result wasn't decided until the last run. Since I am just an innocent bystander to the long-running debate, I will let the normal correspondents provide the details and the color of the fastest Alfa (Be sure to tune in to find out how a yellow GTV affected the final results).

Final Raw Time Results, #7 - Points Event 7 - 2008-07-27
Pax Time Results, #7 - Points Event 7 - 2008-07-27
There are the raw results.
George and Dee now running 275 35 15 hoosiers! Needless to say this has added to their advantage. Where Bud and I once were competitive with Dee...no longer. She is nearly 1 second faster than us now!
So in comes Enrique. Been talking all the smack. Gonna spank my but. Put me on the pain train again. DENIED!!!! Hell yeah!!!!
Not only was he denied......he came unprepared. Rather than show up with his wheels and tires, he tried to sneak in with a set of hoosiers off John Hick's GTV. But alas, Hicks has been running some wild offset wheels to essentially widen the car about 1 inch beyond the fender lip. Enrique put these babys on and it was clear that he was going to rub the fenders off his concours princess.
So then Enrique decided he just wasn't going to run. He didn't want to "hurt" his street tires. He flatly refused to race me in his black spider, even though I, Bud, and George each assured him he would be fine on his street tires. This time...Budsy said no to Enrique driving his car. Budsy's quote, "I don't want him wearing out my tires!" Enrique was not going to drive his concours princess. He was quiting and complaining about dirt on his hands getting on his princess!
So left with the dilemma, I let the unprepared, already forfeited Enrique drive the "Blizzard". He drove my baby, burning up my tires, all day long. He had at least a 150lb ballast advantage. Yet despite all his smack talk of Black Spiders faster than white spiders. Despite his smack talk of how he was going to beat me in my own car. Despite his 7 run cheatery over my two runs at the convention, I spanked his Black loving spider's arse!!!!!
Now at one point I had visions of the ultimate revenge dancing in my eyes. Enrique was closing in on Budsy. Could it happen? Enrique beat budsy in my car! This was a dream come almost true. But alas, after about the fourth run for the two of us (eight total), the tires started to peak and let go. Budsy with his cool tires continued trying to best my time but was not even getting close. After the 6th run, I had beat him by a half a second! But alas, we got one extra run. Bud wasn't ready when it came to his turn....so technically, he forfeited that run. But I'll concede, even though he ran out of turn, with his cool tires at 7 runs....me now at 14 on my tires..., he came out and made a dramatic run and passed me by .17 seconds. I was running after him. Tried to bring in that .2 needed, but my car had already fallen off two runs prior. So in the end....Enrique and Black spider falls flat on their butts, and Budsy squeaks out a contested .17 second victory over me in his very last run on cool tires. Oh well...such is life!
I gave ole Enrique his best opportunity to beat me. In the Blizzard he had everything I had power and handling wise, and 150lbs lighter...and yet he was spanked by nearly a second. And old Budsy only squeaked by me by .17 seconds on his very last run, despite me codriving with Enrique and cooking the hoosiers! I consider the day a great victory!!!
To sum it up, I like to look at the cumulative times over the 7 runs we had. Add the times up and see who was the fastest consistently all day long! So everything counts! Here are the results:
John M: 255.181 seconds
Budsy: 261.432 seconds +6.251 from John M
Enrique: 263.155 seconds +1.723 from Bud, +7.974 from John M
Victory for me!
Best Regards,
John M

Now, leave it to John to find a politically correct "Spin" on the day's results. We discussed this at dinner afterward but you found a new way to describe the action. In fairness, let's hear from the others...
Also, to support the theory of "If Some's good, More's better", see the image of a 275/35x15 Hoosier A6 on a 9.00 x 15 rim. This helps to make RED cars faster. And John, remember, if a 68 year old woman beats you by one second on a 30 second course, that equates roughly to TWO seconds on a 60 second course (Murray, if you get some fender flares from Charlie DeMarco and take a saber saw to your bodywork, you too can have outrageous tires).
This is all in fun, right?...

Red Alfas and yellow Alfas are definitely the fastest. But white spiders are definitely faster than black spiders! And I think the days of me and ole Budsy standing a chance against Dee are over! And you can tell her I said so. Just no way now...and it was always something to strive for in the past. We are toast! But Bud and I are not the slowest!!!
Best Regards,
John M

Since Enrique and Murray and Bud are all on the Pain Train, I thought I might let them see my official spokesman, Terry Tate!

Wow....its been a week since the beat down in LEX. Enrique must have crawled under a rock somewhere to lick his wounds. And Budsy is still spinning from the over 6 second whooping I put on him. I cannot believe how these two are too embarrassed to speak up! I guess they are enjoying their first class tickets on Pain Train, Baby! Whoooooo!!!!
Best Regards,
John M

John, I'll stay out of your fued with Enrique. But you really need to get off Budsy's case. I've never been to an autocross where "total time" had any meaning whatsoever. Face it, Budsy beat you !

Oh my, my... poor John... still having problems looking at the scoreboard (just like at the convention )... So, let's see:

Yeah, John was really happy 'cause he was ahead all day and celebrating that he was off the Pain Train he created... I thought so too, but after I had finished my runs and came back to John's car, he was all upset... Turns out Bud beat him - in the last run! Oh, oh,.... yeah John actually said: "We're not off the Pain Train. I put you on it, and Bud put me on it..." I have to say that I have never seen John so disappointed. I didn't even have the heart to give him a hard time,... (and he knew that I wasn't going to be commenting on the BB for a week), but now - it's official: John is still riding the Pain Train he created... he loves that "Wooooo, hooooo!"
It was a lot of fun seeing the KY group and running with them at the autocross. John was faster than me at the autocross, but of course, I was driving a slow "Liberace white" car, so that was not suprising...
I guess an explanation is in order here... A week before the autocross John called me and he went over my modification points... Yeah, he verified that my black beauty is a legitimate class E Spider. That was so funny... When he added the points, there was a long silence and I could just tell that John was "shaking like a leaf on a tree"... See, John always thought that I was cheating and not adding all the mods, but once he verified that my car was indeed at the top of class E, he understood that its black pedigree makes her a naturally fast car... Now, he's seen my black beauty many times so I'm sure he was saying to himself: "What am I going to do? I've done all these mods to my white car, it's in class C already, and Enrique's car is class E car, and it's faster than mine!"
John lucked out and got a reprieve however... On Saturday I drove straight (750 miles!) from NJ to the KY KARS Giulietta party (47 people and a ton of Alfas! ), and was planning on going home to Ohio that night. I was planning on getting my Nito tires, and then driving back early Sunday morning to the autocross... Well, our party host very graciously suggested that I stay overnight at his house instead of driving another 2 hours, and I could also borrow his Hoosier tires for the autocross! The offer was way to appealing, so I did just that. Unfortunately, when the tires were mounted at the autocross parking lot, the wheel offset was too much for my Spider. There was no clearance between the tires and the rear fenders, so I was not able to use them. You should have seen John - he was so relieved and happy! And he wanted me to run my black beauty on its street tires, which I have done before... (Yeah, he was thinking, my race Hoosiers against his street tires - I got him now!) But I won't autocross on the street tires any more. With 20k miles on them, they still have a lot of tread left, but they bear the scars of the last time I ran them at an autocross, and I need them to last a while longer taking me back and forth on my usual trips between OH and NJ...
Anyway, John wanted off that Pain Train so bad that when I told him I wasn't going to autocross at all 'cause all I had were street tires, he offered that I use Bud's car! | |
