Hi Murray,
I just went back and read your post again. Your S4 spider should have a 4.11:1 differential, or did you change it?. My '76 did come with a 4.56.

I changed it out to a 4.56 that was shimmed to 47%.

It was probably a little slower than that Murray. I am running 205 50 15....which would probably account for 3-4 mph difference slower from stock 4.56 diff with 195 60 15 or 185 70 14. I didn't realize we were moving quite as fast as we were. Like George, I don't look down at the gauges.....don't have time. Only reason I knew that I was at 7k on the rpms was I heard the rev limiter hitting. And honestly....I would have never guessed 60-70 mph. Didn't seem that fast at all.
Best Regards,
John M

Ooops... I do have a set of Hoosier R6, but those are for the track. I use A6 for autocross. Sorry for the confusion.
In Hoosier-Speak, R= "Race", A= "Autocross", and 6 is the replacement for the different versions of the 3 series tire that proceded this (A3S03, A3S04, A3S05 along with the R3S03, R3S04, etc).
Any DOT approved sticky tire with a tread wear rating from 0 to around 50 is considered a "R" compound tire (kinda based on the name of the old BFGoodrich Comp TA R1). Hence "R" is a common name for any company's sticky tire.
And... we all know you are running a Hoosier Spec Miata tire. You will be even faster with a nice sticky set of A6.

Shhh....don't tell all my secrets George!!!! Seriously though...I plan on a set of A6 for the convention. I may save the R3 aka SM for the time trial so I don't toast the A6 puppies. If money was no object I would love a set of both A6 and R6 compound tires mounted on seperate wheels. If tirerack or anyone with money to donate cares to help a poor Alfa owner out...I won't turn you down!
Best Regards,
John M

Well, a family emergency kept me away from the BB for a few days, and I can see how desperate my two poor buddies have become...
First, it was an awesome day! I really enjoyed it and will make every effort to join future autocrosses. The course was very cool. The curves proved to be too much for my stock tires, and I sure wasn't planning on a full 360 spin out. Nonetheless I did stay "on course" and didn't hit any cones... In fact, I had no DNFs all day. I'm actually shocked that I didn't end up last (there were 111 registered drivers according to the organizer), 'cause everywhere I looked I only saw sticky tires, and everyone was a lot faster than me - much more accomplished drivers for sure...
Speaking of drivers - we had John going with the "something is wrong with Bud's engine" thing. No doubt that John's car is much faster than Bud's. That was very evident on the slaloms which our Spiders almost managed to turn into straight-aways! We all noticed that so Bud just told John that there has to be something wrong with his engine... No doubt all the work John did has paid off. However, Bud wasn't driving like I've seen him drive before... After all, he's already proven that he's a better driver than John - right, John?
As far as our bet - Mr. Siert - last time I checked on this thread I gave you a reprieve, due to John's head problem (the car that is... ) And and now you want to arrange a new bet after these results are in?! I know, I know, you're desperate, but sorry buddy - I'm a formal man, and so, you still owe me!!
I've been planning on restoring my '74 Spider (all original) for a while now, and after seeing George's car again, I'm thinking that a set of wider wheels and flairs would look very cool. As always, George and Dee were a lot of fun to watch. It's pretty amazing to see them post such competitive times, especially when you see the cars they are competing against.
When is the next event?
Best regards,
Enrique
P.S. John - You were right about the compressor charging... Mine was not all the way off, but it's charged now. I'll be bringing it down for the next event. Still haven't found my new pressure gauge though.

John, You are so full of crap! I didn't have a off day, you were just faster than mate and the course was faster and longer than before. You lie so much. Your best timed run was only 8/tenths better than my best timed run.
Thats not much when the advantages you are taking are considered. The course have several long "straight-aways" - no run-ways! You simple out ran me on the straights. More power more speed.
Count up the extra considerations you are cheating with:
Your 10.5 pistons, My stock 9.0s
Your big valves / big valve seats, My stock valves.
Your three angle valve cuts, My stock valves.
Your fully ported ans poilished intake and exhaust ports and runners
My rough F.I. stock runners /ports.
Your 45 DCOEs, My 40 DCOEs into a F. I. head.
Your fresh head job, My stock 90,000 mile head.
You are just simply out powering me now that you have had that high performance valve job. Your engine is probably making 40 to 50 more horepower than mine. When the course gets smaller I'll be beating you again,
and I won't have to enlarge my valves to do it.
You cheat, You lie,
Always play by the rules or you may find yorself playing by yourself.

I did not lie. I said 0.8 between us. Read my post. Heck...here are the times: http://www.ckrscca.org/soloevents/07...0_fin_.htm#dsp
I still think you were having an off day. And I don't think my car is making 40-50 hp more than yours. That would put me making more than George and I seriously doubt that is the case. But you fail to mention how much better your suspension setup is. You have all that negative camber dialed in and not to mention the rear sway bar disconnected. I have only springs and shocks and your chassis stiffener...nothing else. You got that and the poly and I suppose more. Oh...and what of your cams, your exhaust, your ignition, your carbs....lets not pretend that your car is a stock ride.
I suppose we all need a trip to the dyno to see where each car stacks up. I have no idea what mine is making. The only big change between before the valve spring disaster and after was the openening up the carb mounting plates from 40 to 45mm. Everything else was already there and has not been changed.
You know...it might not be the car!
Best Regards,
John M
