fuel supply system
Thought I would continue the fuel system saga from my first thread.
I took up John's suggestion about removing the fuel tank. Since my car has a build date of 10/79, it is a later build and consequently has some 1980 mods. The fuel tank pulls fuel from the top and yes has a pre-pump in the sender. When I removed the metal cover over the fuel tank I found wire leads disconnected. I would assume these leads power the pre-pump. Upon closer inspection they looked like they had never been attached ever! Maybe this is why the car sat so long. It may of had fuel supply issues for the entire length of its life.... Someone at the factory may have made a boo boo!
Anyways, the pre-pump was covered in a tarry like substance which I suspect is gummy old fuel. I can't even see the screen on the bottom, nor clean it. I will be taking the tank to a radiator shop to be thoroughly cleaned.
What really worries me is the state of the injector pump. The front filter was so gummy that I had to take a pipe wrench to remove the filter housing from the base and it's not even threaded on as most of you know.
I did get a fuel pump off ebay for $50.00 new and its a bosch with the exact same inlet and outlet sizes as the one that came off the car .... rated at 65 psi. I guess tomorrow I will order a pre-pump also.
According to Johns plumbing instructions I think the front filter was plumbed incorrectly too. It would be great to get some clarification on the routing again. The line with the pressure sensor goes to front most port on the injector pump, or the rear?
Anyways thanks for the suggestions guys and wish me luck on a functional injector pump, with any luck the TURD (she's metallic pooh brown)should be running soon.
later...
