VVT / Cams

Hi Papajam ! Folks at IAP are great! Had first hand knowledge of the effects -yes it will add to the emmissions. It also transforms the car and gives top end power in good measure. Cams always work best in conjunction with other mods. Higher compression is really nice to have ( but probably is a killer on emmissions) . It is possible to do something on the intake side of the Injection ( I have no idea what ) . The cams are now on my do over the winter list.

The cams use the VVT but due to their higher lift some material has to be removed from the cylinder head at the top of the cam follower sleeves. This probably can be done by a hand grinder with the head on car (that's how I did it years ago - but if I remove head a shop can do a prettier job - and they will set valve clearance for me).

Alfas have the most complex valve adjustment process known to man - I expect that getting the clearances adjusted after the cam switch will be the most time consuming part if I do this myself with the head on. I'll also need a special socket for the VVT mechanism.

One painful memory encourages me to keep the head on - I messed up the last Alfa head I installed when I had the #1 piston at TDC when I put the head on - and bent several valves. The Cardisk/later Factory manual advises that the cams are loosened so that they are closed when head goes on . This is much better advice than that given in the past ( to have alignment marks opposite each other ) since the cams tended to move and interference occurred with the piston at TDC. I now turn crank back from the TDC and bring it back gingerly after the head is on !
