is this a spica? if so that is needed for idle and they last like 10 to 20 years and the replacment cost like $1
if this is a L-jet then the bypass is not bad and last longer then the new types used today. they seem to go bad if the car sucks in some paint fumes or many other things that can make the valve stick. The stepper system seems good as long as the ECU is good.

slyalfa, not to be rude but..

do you know what you are talking about?no stepper valve on the 84 spider.it seams to be just a simple thru and thru , it doe's have a blead screw on it, but i can put the bmw thrmostate cap on my car, to blead the system, thanks anyway.

it is ok. I just did not know what you have.
And when you start talking about BMW parts then I am thinking you also might have a aftermarkit ECU.
And then the bypass could be any type. As most aftermarkit ECUs can control all types. the old BOSH type does not need any control other then a DC source to help it heat up. I do not know what "bmw thrmostate cap" with out seeing it but is sounds like is does the same thing as the old bosh type alfa used, with a blead screw bult in. And should work fine. (post a pic of it it might be a good part for DIY EFI projects)

Do you also have a A/C?
If so you might want to add one of the simple DC valves if you do not have one allready. Wire it to open when the A/C kicks in. And you can set it so when the A/C kicks in you bypass just the right amount so the RPM will stay rock solid.

If you live in a warm climate, or if you drive the car only in moderate weather, then you can get away with this mod.. The reason the hoses, and I'm assuming your talking about the coolant hoses running to the heater core, are their is to keep the throttle body warm and prevent icing of the throttle plate.

Bianchi,

That WAS a bit rude. He was trying to help, and since you don't list the year of Spider in this thread, it was a reasonable response.

Judging by a few of your recent posts, it seems you are intent on out-engineering Alfa on everything from the spare tire to the tail lights. That's fine with me, but you don't seem to react very well when people offer comments about your ideas.

Joe

Smile to, slyalfa and joe cab...

i ma sorry if my words upset you., i was not trying to be rude, but being on line as you know, works can take on diff. meanings, it depands how youi read them........but one thing, had to laugh on this point...re- en. my alfa ...with a pare tyre from a ford escort, i was just trying to lower some weight and poss. adding some room to the trunk, for odds and ends, a smaller spare tyre would give a room to put some jumper cables in ( to jump other peoples cars>> ), and some tools. bye for now, randell
