I have had excellent service from IAP, Centerline and Re-originals. Usually things are right - if I've had to return something it was no problem either.

I had read on the Alfa Digest once, some time ago, that they were too large across to fit properly, and bought the set on my '74 Spider from Centerline this past Spring. They fit perfectly. Well, I was too stupid to remember that two days ago when I ordered a set for my '87 Spider from IAP. Guess what? Too big, just as was posted here, by several thousandths, so I can't install the circlips. The cups also feel a bit loose in their bores, which isn't good, either.
So, continuing with my stupidity, I called IAP to yell. Carl asks me what year my Spider is, and when I reply '87, he says that some '87 Spiders are different from every other Spider made from '71-'94. Just some '87's . . . really? Any bets what Carl would have said if I had an '83 Spider? Carl was helpful, though, recommending that next time I buy them from NAPA. I'll take that advice.
Please stop buying parts from these idiots, it only lets them keep doing the same thing to us all, selling junk. I've been burned on hydraulics, a clutch kit, and electric parts in the last several years. My fault I got hosed again, but I was in a hurry.

I hate it too when I get (thru no fault of my own) parts that are wrong. I hate it more when you get talking to someone that has no business working behind a parts counter (ah, what's a choke pull off , a carb float, what's that , hey Charlie, do we sell wheel seals ). I don't blame the person, I blame management that puts the guy there. All this being said, I've bought a bit from IAP & have had no problems.

I have had no problem from IAP also. the problem I have is the " what is the make and model, and year of the car" if I ask for a spark plug by part number. the training of the local autoparts sales persons is nonexistant.

I buy plenty of stuff from Centerline and have always had good experiences with them. For u-joints, I'm lucky to be in Berkeley and buy genuine Alfa ones from Jon Norman.

Been ordering Alfa parts from the usual suspects for close to 25 yrs. Yeah I've had a few items screwed up, I send them back and they always make good.. All in all I still thank God that their around giving out pretty good advice and service. I can't imagine what Alfa life would be like without them.

It seems the only wrong IAP did to you was to suggest you go to NAPA. After a month of waiting for NAPA to send me a waterpump, when it finally came in, it was the wrong one. According to NAPA, the 91-94 pumps also fit 74-90, which is very wrong...I'd never use NAPA for my Alfa again. I went to a local parts dealer and they wanted $200 for the pump. IAP sent me out the correct pump on the first try and was at my door in just 3 days and under the cost of $100 even with shipping.

Another small auto chain called Bumper to Bumper can get the right size, but they want $26 each for them. I installed both u-joints from IAP with no problem and it solved my rumble/vibration upon take off.

It's worth mentioning that this thread with its unfortunately inflammatory title is over a year old. GreenSpider's resurrecting it seems point out that Alfa u-joints are a bit of a tricky fit with some variation and overlap in the application. That has been my experience. For what it's worth I got an incorrectly sized set from Centerline for my duetto about 6 yrs. ago. I'm quite confident that they would have refunded my return with no problems but I set them aside thinking that they may fit the Giulietta that I had at that time. Hurricane Isabel rendered them useless for any future project. I continue to use both Centerline and IAP with good experiences and the occasional screw up (usually on my end). Calling Carl "to yell" as Dean said in the opening post may indicate part of the problem.

Even with OEM Alfa u-joints, Glenn Oliveria and I spent quite a bit of time measuring the thickness of C-clip pairs to find ones just the right size to install. It's not a totally black and white area getting Alfa u-joints right.

I think it is absolutely beneficial to all, when someone posts a bad experience, but we also have to be very careful about surmising from this that everything is junk. One factor to consider is that IAP is not on this forum, and therefore cannot comment. (I'm not saying that we should doubt the poster's veracity, but that we need to consider that we are not privy to IAP's explanation about how the error came about.) Another factor to consider is that IAP does value its customers and business, as evidenced by the fact that they do contribute in the sponsorship of Alfa events. (Not to mention that some of them are Alfisti – just as we are.) I think there is value in having a vendor, particularly when their prices are well below Alfa's list price. Let us also be cognoscente that this is a public forum, and anyone doing an internet search may come across our threads. I would hope that we want to be perceived as a fair forum.
Best regards,
