No you do not need to remove the cam shafts to remove the head.
But, you do need to remove them if you are going to have the head machined, which I did and I believe most people with head gasket leaks have done.
That's a lot of work to get the head off and not make sure that the head is flat. I think I paid $100 to get the head machined, so it wasn't that expensive.
I need 8 thousandths taken off as it was not flat.
I would recommend you have the head looked at for flatness and if you do need to machine the head, the cam shafts and the tensioner pulley will need to be removed so that the head can be flipped and sit flat on the machine.
