Aren't there already stainless or aluminum aftermarket ones available from several race supply houses? I think Msiert has one on his spider. But if you could make one cheap enough that looks good and or original, people will come.

Just today, I ended up buying a very used looking one on eBay. How can something that spends its life covered in oil vapor get so darn rusty? I'd be interested in a new one if it's not going to be crazy expensive.

I think that authenticity or no, stainless is the way to go from the buy-one-once-and-be-done-with-it perspective.

However, stainless is comparatively a lot harder hard to work with than plain steel or aluminum.

How does the pricing compare on the two materials? For a $25 difference in price per unit, the regular steel starts looking a lot more attractive. As others have pointed out, I can already get an expensive one from a race supply shop.

I seriously looked into doing this "project" a while ago and I can share my findings:
Making out of SS is out because of the cost difficulty to work with and joining the pieces.
It was my/our conclusion, that the best material would be copper: it would not rust, easy to painf black, form and easy to solder with Tin/Pb low temp. Also easy to source the small tubes, also in copper and solder them to the Cyclone cannister. I found a source for separators in Italy, but the 130 Eu cost plus shipping put a stop to that.
A tinsmith shop was the craftsman that was going to make them for me.

Copper? You recall the brass internal honeycomb material was turned to "dust" by the acidic OVS compounds (organic acids + air + water). In my industrial experience, brass & bronze have not held up well in acidic environments. Perhaps copper is cheap and workable but maybe not "lastable"?? We may be back to plastic??

This thread reminded me I needed to check the one I made out of a PVC cleanout fitting and copper 3/4 pipe/fittings. See OVS horror show thread.

The part held up ok, doesn’t appear to have worked very well though. I pulled it off and opened it up and found the inner sleeve (black plastic tube had separated from the screw-in cap. The copper inlet into the side also popped off when I was tugging on the hose to try to undo it (although if wasnt leaking prior to my messing with it). The culprit in both cases was the epoxy I used. It didn’t hold up. Need something more heat and oil resistant. Suggestions?

I am thinking this severely limited the cyclone separation action. Had a dribble of butterscotch pudding looking stuff in both large diameter hoses. Copper itself shows no sign of degradation, ditto on the pvc. Car rolled over 55k miles last week on the way back from Viva Alfa in Celebration, FL... so must be 1000 miles or so on this part.

Pics below, comments welcome

Count me in also, either style. Material less important as long as it works as originally intended by Alfa, IMHO
