Charging system help!!!

So last night I was on a spirited drive when my Generat. light came on. I broke off from the group and decided to try to get home before I got stuck... I made it home no problem but now I need help troubleshooting the charging system...

Basically on the drive home I could see the Generat. light was on very (very) dimly while driving the car at a steady state or while idling and even as I rev'ed up... but, and this is the weird part, the light would come one full brightness during deceleration or any time the rev's were dropping. When I got home I made a quick voltage measurement and it was holding steady at around 13.0V with/or without the headlights on...

This morning I ran some tests of the basic charging system... here is what I measured.

Battery voltage after sitting overnight: 12.63V
Battery Voltage with fuel pump running: 12.27V
Battery voltage during cranking: 11.79V

after the car started the voltage jumped to 13.05V then quickly climbed to 14..45V... Generat. Light never came on even with rev'ing up and down.

5 Minutes later...
Battery voltage at idle: 13.95V and Generat. light on bright and continuous
Battery Voltage with the engine at 3K RPM: 14.02V and light still on.

Is there a procedure I should follow that will help me identify if the problem is in the Alternator (Generator) or in the external voltage regulator.

some times the gen, light can be set of with the sightest touch..turn your fan on at night, that sucker will glow brightly.if you are running 14.5 or close to that it should be fine.

Sounds an awful lot like the problem I was having a few weeks ago:

FWIW, it hasn't happened since I cut the CSS wire and hooked it to the starter instead of the solenoid. Might just be a happy coincidence, maybe not.

Yes, sorry, as Eric said, the cold start solenoid; this only applies to Spica-equipped cars, such as Raffi's '74, if it still has the stock injection.

A bit more background, since I didn't give any. There's a condition that sometimes rears its head on these cars that's been referred to as starter run-on, wherein the CSS, which gets its power from a connection to the starter solenoid, somehow backfeeds power to the solenoid and keeps it energized, not letting it disengage, and the engine keeps cranking, even with the key off. As far as I know, no one can explain why or even how it's possible, but it happens. The simple solution is to cut the CSS connection at the solenoid and reconnect it to the starter side, so it's only powered when the starter is getting power. There's a good thread about it here:

http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/elec...html#post30087

That link is to post #19 in the thread, which details the solution, but the whole thing is worth reading for some discussion on the problem.

Now, as to why this might be relevant here, if you look at the thread I linked earlier to when I was having a similar problem, my problem seemed coincident with a flooded, very difficult start condition (possibly implicating the CSS, maybe being continuously powered instead of releasing), and my voltage regulator was blisteringly hot, which made me think something was drawing way too much power. I had always meant to make the CSS mod/correction anyway, so I did that. I can't be sure it was the solution to my alternator light/hot voltage regulator problem, but in the couple of weeks since then I haven't had the problem again. Then again, it's been cold and rainy and I haven't had a lot of chance to drive her (though I did have a nice long ride to a car show and back), and on top of that it's really hard to prove a negative. All I can do is wait and see if it happens again, and the longer it goes the better it looks that it was the solution.

Very familiar indeed & Bingo!

Turns out fuse #6 was popped! No idea why it blew but replacing it cured the indicator problem. I'll keep a close eye on it for now...

Thanks for the quick response and the tremendous help!!!

Fuse #6 blew again last night...

Time to pull out the wiring diagram and figure out what's loading down that line.
