Weight and shipping infor for Spider Transmission

I have someone interested in buying my transmission from my Spider, but I would need to ship it to them and am trying to figure out how much that would be. Anyone know the weight of the trans. and/or have any experience with shipping them? I was told I could wrap it in plastic and strap it to a pallet bottom for shipping.

I shipped a trans last year that came in at just about 80 lbs including the shipping crate I built for it. The trans weighs in at just over 70 lbs dry with fork and slave. I think I sent it UPS overweight but don't recall the exact cost but $50 comes to mind.
Personally, I would use more than just plastic. My experience with some carriers is that bulletproof Kevlar is barely enough to protect the contents!

I just shipped a couple of transmissions. With the bell housing and shift lever removed and fluid drained each weighed around 60 lbs. I packed it with foam as best I could and reinforced the box with tape and it barely held together. Luigi (Sono VeL.O.ce) could tell you about the condition they arrived in, if he's around. They made it there OK, but I think next time I'd build in some plywood reinforcements, or possibly just a small crate.

Either way it'll be a lot cheaper if you can ship it UPS rather than by Yellow Freight or something like that.

Good luck,
Jason

They were almost naked when they got here! But they were for parts and they survived just fine. I would make a plywood box and pack it tight with padding.

Check DHL for shipping

Just having had a lovely black rubber front bumper shipped to me, I think that you should check into shipping with DHL. The bumper I received weighed in at 52 pounds and shipping dimensions were 60x27x10 so I was charged an oversized charge for a dimensional weight of 70 pounds. I had it picked up at a residence($3.00 fee) and delivered to my house instead of a business($2.00 fee). The total cost for such extravagance? $19.76 including a fuel surcharge of 2.8%!

Gonna be tough to beat that. Look into it at 1-800-call-DHL or DHL.com. And no, I have no financial interest in the company, I'm just cheap!

Don't suppose you remember what the dimensions were? If I have that and the weight I can get UPS and DHL to give me estimates. The guy at UPS said he shipped a trans once and it was $750 (wasn't an Alfa for sure).

I've been using DHL to ship everything so far. Just shipped the panel sitting below the windshield and some other stuff that was large, but nothing like a trans. Didn't see the overweight/size section on their site, but I'll have to look into that and call them.

I few months ago I bought a trans on eBay. Shipping was from new England to Michigan. It waspacked in a double cardboard box (one box inside the other) and cost about $50. You can save money if you ship it to the nearest UPS Depot and "Hold for pickup".
