To throw a little more mud on the subject... The trapeziodial mirrors that were fitted to Spiders after 1975 were different than the earlier ones fitted to GTC's. Here is what they looked like:

This mirror is on eBay right now. Current bid price is only $9.99.
It's reported to be an original Vitaloni brand mirror. New mirrors from IAP, Centerline, OKP, etc. are reproductions.

Vitaloni was what mine was on my '76 Spider.

Resurrecting an old thread... sorry

I've been toying with an idea for a while... My wife's Spider is a 1990, Black in color, and the chrome trim really looks complimentary IMHO. It had dual power side mirrors but at some point in it's life (PO's) it lost the driver side mirror, being replaced with a similar looking (non-power) aftermarket unit. It looks fair, and the remaining original (passenger side) power mirror works but is starting to look pretty beat up (pitted). I've been shopping around for some chrome mirrors for my 240Z restoration and started to think how nice a set of chrome mirrors would look on the Alfa. Quite frankly, Alfa made some of the nicest chrome side mirrors around (even the Miata guys love em). My question is this: Will some of the nice chrome Spider mirrors out there ( http://www.international-auto.com/in...?fa=p&pid=2672 or the round ones featured here - http://www.centerlinealfa.com/produc.../pages/p34.pdf ) fit properly on a 1990? Without pulling off the old mirror, I'm concerned that as they are power mirrors, the holes might be rather large, too large for the older chrome mirrors. Anyone out there tried this? I'm not a bodyman, so filling in body holes is basically out for me.

I replaced my broken Baby Tornadoes that were original to my Spider with a set of the chrome/stainless from IAP and those mounting holes were exactly the same between the two. The earlier round ones had less space between the holes and would have need filling.

I, too, have wondered if the chrome trapezoidal mirrors would look ok with the S3 bumpers and spoiler, or if they would look out of place... In my opinion, they have a real strong classic/timeless look to them. I would have to use the power mirror hole on the center console for something else, though...

DavidB,

Would your '79' mirror holes be the same as on my '78'? The PO installed the black mirrors on the car I have so I'm not sure if the black ones have the same measurement as the original chrome mirrors did. I would love to change to the chrome type, but only if the holes are the same. Thanks.

Question: I recently purchased a 1974 Spider that has, I am pretty darn sure, 53,000 two-owner miles. However, it has the black plastic Vitaloni Tornedos on both sides. Is that correct? I thought all the '74s had one round chrome mirror, but then I saw a picture of another '74 with a black plastic Vitaloni on the driver's side.

Anybody?

My very late '74 originally had a black plastic vitaloni on the driver's side only. I may be imagining things, but I think it actually had an Alfa part number. It now has the round chrome style.

Mirrors on '71 GTV: Marini Markings vs. No Markings

I need new side mirrors for my '71 GTV (currently installed chrome trapazoids are thrashed). I'm looking at replacing with the circular versions to be accurate (and their cool). International-Parts has two types: one with the cross and serpent. The other with the cross and serpent AND Marini markings. Images below are (1) with Marini marks and (2) without. My question is, historically, what is the difference? Which would have likely been fitted on the original 71 GTV?

I realize that the mirrors were installed by dealers, if at all, so there's a lot of leeway with mirrors. But, assuming they *were* installed, would they have had Marini's marks?

Thanks for your input.

The one with MARINI marking is more appropriate than the one without. The one without the marking became available recently (maybe within past few years IIRC) and I am pretty sure that the MARINI marking was omitted in the process of making a mold for the mirror. I have seen a version without ANY marking (not even the cross and serpent) too. In any case, they are both reproduction so it's more of matter of preference IMHO.

Enjoy your Alfa,

You know, for what it's worth, the mirrors without the Marini markings look cleaner to me, and given I will likely never show the car, I'm going clean. Thanks again.
