Finally, The Long Test Run

For those of you that have followed my saga:

I purchased a non-running 86 Alfa three months ago. After three months and $2200 in parts, yesterday was my long 150 mile highway test. I was using this to decide if further work was need anywhere. It was the first real check of fuel mileage and I was going to use that number to help determine if the car required much more work or not.

Well, I picked about the hottest day of the year to do it. However the A/C worked as well as could be expected. The engine temp held consant at 180, and it drove well with out failure. Except at the last stop sign near my house I had no throttle. The nut fell off the butterfly and the cam and linkage fell off. I just put it back on to get it in the driveway, and I'll find another nut and spring later.

The good news is the Alfa made 31 MPGs. Since most of you say 30 is good for that year I believe I am done worrying about the status of the drivetrain.

Good news. 31 mpg is about right for steady highway cruising. I get low 30's on the highway and mid 20's around town. It could probably do better around town but it's too hard to restrain my right foot...!
