And to think it all started with an innocent question about nipples...

John look at the tube shape too, on my S-4 it has a bend at the bottom of it, looks like it was done to miss the exhaust manifold. It also connects to the cam cover...............does the S-2, S-3 tubes connect like this too?

Yes, for S3 anyway: a little yoke kinda thing that has a rubber doodad around the tube and a single bolt holding it onto an ear on the cam cover.
The earlier cam cover of indertminate model year I have now does not have that ear, though it could have been cut off by a PO, or simply didn't exist.
Without knowing one way or the other, I'd question it on an S2. (moot point as you have an S4 cover anyway)
You can see the yoke in the 'heat shield' thread in a pic I provided.

Unless I get a S-2 dipstick tube from APE. Sounds like a S-3 tube would be better for my conversion.

Shouldn't matter. The bracket isn't part of the tube anyway.
Just a matter of it needing to be long enough to actually get captured by the yoke. If not, improvise.

I'm talking about the tap at the top of the tube, my S-4 tap is part of the tube.

My dipstick is bigger than yours!
OK........seriously.................it is....
OK, OK...............seriously..............they are night and day different. The S2 dipstick is like 6-8 inches shorter than the S4. Note that the S2 enters via the oil pan port. The S4 enters via the side of the block. You'd need a different pan to accomodate the S2 dipstick tube and stick. If S3 went through the block like the S4 and if it comes up next to the valve cover like the S4, then that is what you need.
Best Regards,
John M

Pix of my stock '85 tube.
Top portion shows how it get into the engine, bottom shows the yoke that was originally slid further up the tube and bolted to the ear on the cam cover. (the stuff that looks like oil drip runs is actually the dribbled spray on gasket sealer the PO used on the pan, so I don't wanna hear nothing about 'leaks' m'kay? Just been through a couple weeks of dealing with just that)

Thanks.....................for all your help.
There are several reasons why I wanted to do this, one is so I don't have to empty the snoot tank the other is I want to open up the hole in the gasket at the cam vent tube to allow better venting and to lower the base pressure at the high RPM's.
I tried removing the gasket all together and drove it easy for 150 miles plus a couple of full throttle runs through 3rd gear and ended up with 8 oz of oil in the tank with this I felt a day at the track I would have to empty the tank after each session? FWIW at the track last weekend with the stock gasket installed I had 8 oz in the tank. So if I was going to open up the hole in the gasket I had to drain the snoot tak back to the engine.
Today I got started with the dipstick tube conversion. I got the old tube out and noticed that it has a flare end at the base and a flare end on the dipstick tube, looks to me they are meant to fit together..............don't know if the S-3's have this flare or if the base bracket that the S-3 Spiders have will work with the base flare end I have on the base tube?
To open up the crank case venting:
I took a drill and a rat tail file to port the fitting that connects the crank vent hose to the snoot tank. I also took a tin snip to open up the hole in the gasket.
All that is left to do is wait for the dipstick tube w/nipple to come in and install it.
