I was watching QVC last night and saw all sorts of nipples. They were selling vintage copies of Dirty Dancing. They showed a clip where the boy says he has an Alfa Romeo. And the girl said oh....that's my favorite car. This and the nipples reminded me of this dipstick conversation that Murray began.

Best Regards,
John M

Alfa says that the oil return hose to the dipstick tube was changed to a fitting on the righthand side of the block on 14 Oct 86. Since Elio's 87 has the hose on the tube, one might conclude;
A) Elio's Spider was built prior to the above date
B) The change occurred early in the 1987 model year production run

Hi Jim!

My 87 Quad was built Nov 86.

When I stated that my oil separator drained to the dipstick tube I was going from memory. I remembered the rubber connector/coupling of the dipstick tube and thought that it also had the separator drain connection.

Following Papa's tread, I went to check...

Papa and his info is right as always.......

I have my drain on the right side.

I apologise for not beeing thorough and speaking before I checked...

30 lashes to Elio!

BTW I recently investigated getting a new Oil separator, Spider separators are unobtanium, in fact Spider Point would not even reply to my querry. I have one from a Milano that can be modified to work. I hate to tell you how much it costs!!!!

Next thing you know, it'll be all 'dipstick shaft lengths', 'internal diameter of the receiver tube' and 'how much rubber does it take to get form point A to point B'

oil separator

If I may be allowed to be slightly serious, I also found a new Alfa-specific separator to be unavailable. I found generic versions advertised on the internet, usually for off-road (racing) applications.

Eventually I got one from a fellow BB member for a fair price from a car that was being parted out. I think all of the pre-1986 versions are the same, so if you can find one it should work.

T'isn't the seperator that's the object of the chase, it's the version of dipstick tube that has the drainback nipple on it.

Oil Dipstick Tube

Whoops! Thanks for the mid-course correction. I wonder though whether the best course of action to obtain one is to find a S2 or S3 being parted out. It's not like there is anything there to go bad over time.

40 lashes for Tifosi. I know finances are tight but try to pay attention:

Well, I've seen the innards come out all crappy rusty shreds of some kinda mesh material - sorta like a corroded steel or brass pot scrubber thing. Amazes me that there can be rust inside an oil vapor seperator. I guess acidic combustion by-products, condensation and lack of use conspire against it.
